The Jardin medieval du musée de Cluny of Paris !!!

I have heard of the middle ages musuem of Cluny in Paris, but not really made the effort to go until ,I was in a travel forum many many years ago believe it was 2004-05 and someone decided to come to Paris and I would meet them. In the meantime, my Franco-Americans friends from Paris there was one who was a professor of Université de Paris IV in medieval history and wanted to take us there for a tour. Well I put the two together and voilà there was my initiation of the museum. Several years later came back with the family as well. And again, one of th fascinating aspect in my eternal Paris, I found me new pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Jardin medieval du musée de Cluny of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Cluny Museum, its official name National Museum of the Middle Ages-thermes and Hôtel de Cluny, is located in the 5éme arrondissement of Paris, in the heart of the Latin Quarter, in a mansion of the 13C; the Hôtel de Cluny. It has one of the most important world collections of objects and works of art of the medieval period and the thermal baths of Cluny, which are adjoining, are also part of it.  You can easily get here on the metro Cluny –La Sorbonne line 10, and a bit longer St Michel line 4.  Bus lines 21 – 27 – 38 – 63 – 85 – 86 , and 87 . The RER C Saint-Michel, and RER B Cluny – La Sorbonne. As always an easy car ride with nice parking Indigo Place Saint-Michel, located at 25 rue Francisque Gay less than 3 blocks street from the museum.

The medieval public garden of Cluny museum is a nice and peaceful green space. Built in 2000, the Medieval garden is inspired  from  collections of the Museum of the Middle Ages and offers  throughout 5000 m² a succession of spaces evoking nature in medieval times. Stroll among the flowerbeds therefore organized according to their use in the Middle Ages : medicine herb garden (sage, hyssop, rue, wormwood) celestial garden (pink, violet, daisies) love garden (thyme, carnations)… the charm of the medieval garden is to recreate an ancient atmosphere while remaining contemporary. Note that in winter, terraces are set off and the garden is planted from April, until about October.

The so-called Abbots’ Garden is an essential component of the private mansion, built between courtyard and garden. Adopted for the construction of the Hôtel de Cluny by Abbot Jacques d’Amboise at the end of the 15C, the concept persisted until the 18C for the urban residences of the elite. This restoration of the garden’s footprint is all the more important from an architectural history perspective, as the Hôtel de Cluny is one of the very first of its kind in Paris and the only medieval private mansion still visible in the city. The boundaries of this former garden were lost over time to a larger public garden overlooking Boulevard Saint-Germain, but they are still known to us thanks to historical sources. The historic garden of the Hôtel de Cluny is currently closed, and major work is required to reopen it to the public. The major modernization work will allow the Hôtel de Cluny to be restored to its original garden with expected finishe by 2025-2026.
