The Château de Martainville !!!

We have criss cross the region several times over the years especially when living in Versailles, and now glad to have found pictures in my cd rom vault that made me write this post for you and me, The Château de Martainville is worth the detour especially for the museum.and basically the reason for coming here, Therefore, let me tell you about the Château de Martainville !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The town of Martainville-Épreville is located in the Seine-Maritime department no, 76 in the Normandie region of my belle France. It is 17 km from Rouen,on the road N31 from Rouen to Beauvais, 68 km from Évreux, 66 km from Beauvais, 108 km from Honfleur, 130 km from Versailles, and 496 km from my current home. I came here from Versailles, along the A13 to connect with thd D6015 road by Val de Reuil continue same road dir Pont de L’Arche continue same road and bear right to D321 road dir Alizay continue past Romilly sur l’Andelle to connect briefly with the D126 then same road D138 on very curvy roads, and before La Neuville Chant d’Oisel turn right into the D6014 which connect with the D13 road at Fresne le Plan and continue same road to Martainville-Épreville.

The Château de Martainville is a late 15C residence that today houses the Museum of Norman Traditions and Arts, In 1571, Richard LE Pelletier obtained permission from Catherine de Medici and the young King Charles IX to change his name from Le Pelletier to that of the Martainville estate. Subsequently, he became Richard de Martainville, was appointed gentleman of the chamber to Henri III. The Franco-Prussian war of 1870 caused depredations there, then its abandonment. In 1906, the château is purchase by the State at the last minute. But all the original furniture of the castle has already been dispersed. Around 1925, the castle is restored and intended to become after its renovation, from 1955, an agricultural high school. It is entrusted to the General Council of Seine-Inférieure ( later Seine-Maritime ) which finally installs there, from 1962, a Museum of Norman Traditions and Arts. The museum opens to the public on July 14, 1964.

It was originally an estate whose entrance was only from the north, in a lower courtyard oriented east-west, where the old outbuildings still stand, leaning against the north and south boundary walls: the sharecropper’s house, stables, barns, press, sheepfolds. But the great originality of Martainville lies in its absolutely symmetrical plan with a wide crossing corridor placed in the middle of the body and which precedes a staircase located in a tower outside the work on the rear facade, its traditional place in Normandy; the driveway coupled with the staircase on the ground floor corresponds on each floor of the crossing corridors served by the staircase. The musée des Traditions et Arts Normands  or the Museum of Norman Traditions and Arts ,presents permanent collections and a temporary exhibition renewed each year in the 23 rooms of the castle. A vast collection of furniture, costumes, ceramics, glassware and objects of daily life in Upper Normandy dating from the 15C to the 19C has made it possible to constitute an exceptional collection retracing the history of the popular arts and traditions of this region. The ethnography of the Upper Normandy region (Pays de Caux, Eure, Pays de Bray, Littoral) is exhibited in the form of reconstructed farm interiors with furniture and objects of daily life in the 18C and 19C. The top floor presents one of the most important collections of Norman headdresses, jewelry and costumes.

Other things to see here are the Church of Martainville-sur-Ry. Completed in 1667, it was built for the Abbey of Saint-Ouen in Rouen, on land donated by Louis de Martainville. It was consecrated on October 1, 1670, to Our Lady of Peace and Saint Joseph. The sacristy dates from 1857. The Church of Épreville-sur-Ry. Built in the 17C, it is dedicated to Saint Ouen. It has a baptismal font from the 13C, reworked under Louis XIV.

A bit of history I like tell us that Épreville represents the name of an old parish called Épreville-sur-Ry in the 16C, and attached to Martainville-sur-Ry which then took the name of Martainville-Épreville. Jacques Le Pelletier acquired the lordship of Martainville on March 23, 1482. The Le Pelletiers had been established as merchants in Rouen since 1445. Having made their fortune in trade, they were the builders and owners of the Château de Martainville.
