The maison Claude Monet in Giverny !!!

And now lets go back in time when we lived in a royal town of France ! I am glad found me new pictures in my cd rom vaults of Giverny and they should be in my blog for you and me. Ahh yes you know this town actually more like a village ,a certain Claude Monet lived there and voilà a major tourist destination now ; worth the detour me think. Therefore, here is my take on the maison Claude Monet in Giverny !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The village of Giverny is in department Eure no 27 region of Normandie of my belle France. Only 3,5 km from transport hub Vernon, at the union of the Seine and Epte rivers.  Only 74 km from Paris and 64 km from Versailles. I always came by car from rue de la Paroisse turn right on Rue des Reservoirs which becomes Bd du Roi all on the D186 road ; to trafic circle Place de la Loi turning left into Bd Saint Antoine which becomes Route de Saint Germain en Laye same D186 road, to connect with the A13 autoroute de Normandie dir Rouen, stay on right lane to connect with the A13a dir Bonnières sur Seine connect with the D201 dir Giverny left on rue de la Falaise or D5 road bear right into Rue Claude Monet to House of Claude Monet parking on right hand side.

See the maison Claude Monet in Giverny for the artistic senses in you, the art lover. A wonderful visit indeed. The house is very colorful full of flowers all around it a magical spot me think.

In the cuisine or kitchen, the large sheet metal and steel stove is the same one used by successive cooks of the Impressionist painter, including the famous Marguerite! The copper cookware , including sauté pans, casseroles and jam pans are also from the period. In the kitchen with its blue Rouen tiles, the huge stove with multiple ovens and the copper utensils seem to be waiting for their owners to return. Where he kept all the kitchen needs, where tea, olive oil, spices and eggs were stored in units hanging on the wall.

In the salle à manger or dining room and next to the yellow-painted Cauchois sideboards, there are plenty of objects that belonged to Claude Monet. See in particular the set of plates, the large blue vase decorated with bats. The dining room, all in remarkable state of preservation. It has been reconstructed down to the smallest detail. On the yellow walls, you can admire the collection of Japanese prints. The yellow-painted furniture was very modern for the time. In the display cases, you can see the blue earthenware dishes, the yellow and blue service, that Monet had made for holidays.

Then you go to his shop or atelier, where he worked until 1899. On the ground floor, the workshop lounge houses the majority of period pieces. These include two Napoleon III desks, rattan chairs, a small folding table, and the iconic chaise longue. Likely inherited from the Hoschedé family, the beautiful Régence chest of drawers and the cylinder desk 18C, were also part of the furniture.

The first staircase leads upstairs to the private rooms. First, we discover Monet’s bedroom. It was indeed in this bed that the painter rested but also died in December 1926, Objects and pictorial works were present in the room and the adjoining bathroom during Monet’s lifetime, including reproductions of paintings by his friends: Cézanne, Renoir, Signac, and Caillebotte. Finally, the last of the rooms upstairs is Blanche Hoschedé-Monet’s bedroom, which was opened to the public for the first time in 2014. As with Monet’s bedroom, the scenographic reconstruction was carried out by Hubert Le Gall, who drew inspiration from period interiors to recreate as closely as possible the living space of the woman who lived in Giverny until her death in 1947. As for the pieces of furniture presented in Blanche and Alice’s bedrooms, they were largely recovered from the house during the restoration of the place…

In 1883 Claude Monet comes to town in a house that he rented and later purchased in 1890. He change the house and arranged the gardens and vegetable garden as well, and had carved on the Epse river in 1893 a flower garden with a water lilies basin from where he painted the famous Nymphéas.  He died on December 5 1926,  and is buried in the cimetery next to the Church of Sainte Radegonde , Here Claude Monet joins Alice, his son Jean, Suzanne, and Ernest,  (but not Camille Doncieux she is at Vertheil 95). For the record ,Camille was first a model for Monet and later for Renoir and Manet!

  1. I also visited Claude Monet’s house in Giverny, which was a very moving experience, thinking that the artist had lived in this place, which is easy to imagine with the preserved surroundings and furniture. I went there in spring when both parts of the garden are filled with flowers in a density that is hard to imagine. It can get crowded, so it is advisable to book tickets online.
