The Petite Venice or Little Venice is the name of a group of buildings created in 1694, two years after the Grand Canal was opened, built during the reign of Louis XIV in the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, This complex was intended to house shipbuilding sheds. Warships from Marseille or Le Havre were assembled there, alongside a more recreational flotilla. In fact, royal promenades were taken in gondolas imported from Venice, reflecting the court’s fascination with the city of the Doges. A group of buildings located at the eastern end of the Grand Canal, near the Bassin d’Apollon, halfway between Trianon and the Palace of Versailles, was therefore built according to the standards of military architecture of the time, with a rectangular enclosed shape with a central interior courtyard divided into different areas for activity, housing, storage, and workshops. The name Little Venice came from the gift of four gondolas with their Venetian gondoliers made by the Doge of Venice to the king. In addition to gondolas and rowboats, boats typical of French regions or foreign countries were manufactured in their place of origin, dismantled and then transported to Versailles where they were reassembled at Little Venice. Sailors, carpenters and caulkers therefore worked on a varied fleet of rowboats, gondolas, up to larger vessels such as a galley or a galliot. The site of Little Venice, home to the Versailles sailors’ guild, dissolved after the French revolution, was transformed into stables under Louis-Philippe.
