The village of Sainte-Sabine is located in the canton of Arnay-le-Duc in the Côte-d’Or department, no, 21 in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of my belle France. The village is small with only 172 inhabitants (2022), It is 54 km from Chalon-sur-Saône, 29 km from Beaune, 54 km from Dijon, 285 km from Versailles, and 705 km from my current home. On one of my road warrior business trips to Beaune, took a ride in the area a few years back and came upon this picturesque village, I was able to find pictures of a castle in my cd rom vault and decided should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, this is my take on this is Sainte Sabine !!! Hope you enjoy it as I
The thing to see here other than the castle if with more time is the Parish Church of Saint Martin. According to tradition, it was the arrival in the 12C of the relics of Saint Sabina, martyr, that gave rise to the current church. Brought back from Rome by a Cistercian monk who intended them for their abbey of La Bussière, they reportedly refused to go any further. The village of Lassey then took the saint’s name. The church, built and transformed from the 12C to the 14C. It has a superb 47-meter-high bell tower-porch, dating from 1731 and 1774, the Gothic capitals with foliage, and the statues from the 15C to 18C make up a remarkable heritage site worth the detour eventually.
A bit of history here tell us that to the north of the village, a Gallo-Roman sanctuary was discovered in 1837 and excavated in 1854. In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants of Sainte-Sabine relied on Chaudenay-le-Château for protection. During the revolutionary period of the National Convention (1792-1795), the town was called Sabine-le-Plein.
The Château de Sainte-Sabine is located at 8 Route de Semur, (D970) only 6 minutes from the “Pouilly-en-Auxois” exit on the A6 and A38 autoroutes, This is where I came for a business luncheon and took advantage of the nice pretty bar, and was able to take some pictures! The bar & lounge is wonderful bathed in sun-light from the courtyard, or softly lit by its Burgundy stone and red marble fireplace. In the former hunting lodge, the coat of arms on the bar’s imposing chimney. It was in this room, inside a walled cupboard, that the château’s archives were discovered. A library full of vintage books to explore, and a number of wooden board games, not forgetting the central billiard table.

Within the vast 8-hectare park ,is also, home to splendid fallow deers, donkeys, ducks, mallards, jackrabbits and other fascinating animals. Which did not see any,,, They have a nice boutique with a selection of jewelry, ceramics, leather goods, and accessories. Each item, locally sourced, reflects on the charm and character of Burgundy.

The Château de Sainte-Sabine consists of a moated quadrilateral, flanked by corner towers in the form of a bastion, a ground floor and a first floor. The entrance is to the west through a carriage entrance. The main building, on the right as you enter, was modified in the 17C, and its interior facade is adorned with a semi-hexagonal tower. Outside, the upper floor of this building was doubled with a dining room in the form of an orangery in 1990. The interior courtyard is bordered to the north by a neo-Renaissance building and to the east by a parapet. The first trace of the castle dates back to 1461. After several families, it was rebuilt in 1625. Only the pavilions framing the entrance gate seem to have been preserved. In 1717, the north wing was built. Around 1850, the castle was rebuilt in a modern style. The castle has been restored and converted into a boutique hotel.
