A bit of history I like tell us that at the beginning of the 12C, the knights of the Order of the Temple of Jerusalem received as a donation from the king the lands that constitute the Temple enclosure. Surrounded by an 8-meter-high wall, reinforced in the 13C by a keep, the great tower, the enclosure is the central place of the order in the West. Withdrawn from the Holy Land following the failure of the Crusades and having become rich, they were arrested by Philip the Fair and the order was dissolved in 1312. The Temple retained its name and became the property of the Order of the Hospital , and later the Order of Malta and became the home of the Grand Priory of France. The enclosure covered an area of approximately 6 hectares, today between the streets of the Temple, Brittany, Picardy and Béranger. A sovereign order dependent on the Pope, it enjoyed certain privileges that exempted it from taxes. In addition, the place, recognized right of asylum, became a refuge. In the 17C, many hotels were built within the enclosure, sought after by the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie. Artists and beaux-esprits lodged there. In 1786, the enclosure had around 4,000 inhabitants. In the 18C, the French revolution seized the enclosure. The City of Paris had a covered market built between the rue du Temple and the Rotonde. This market, built entirely of wooden frames, had areas such as the Carré Palais-Royal: carpets, silks, ribbons, gloves, feathers, and fashionable items ,Carré de Flore: household linen, Carré du Pou-volant: scrap metal and second-hand clothes ,Carré de la Forêt-Noire: leather Between these four halls and the Rotonde was a “carreau,” a platform where a second-hand clothing exchange operated, which lasted until the post-war period. The city, as part of the urban renewal planned by Napoleon III and Prefect Haussmann, decided to replace it with a metal structure and launched an architectural competition in 1860. Its monumental façade opens onto Rue du Temple. The market, with its metal, glass and brick pavilions, can accommodate more than 2,000 places for vendors. In 1904, it was chosen to house the first Paris Fair. In the 1920s, the demolition of the last remaining third was also put up for sale in 8 lots. Only one lot found a buyer before the great crisis of 1929 and still houses social housing from the RIVP today. After WWII, it became a mecca for Parisian second-hand clothes. Following an architectural competition in 2007, the project was entrusted to the studioMilou architecture agency headed by architect Jean-François Milou. The restructuring and renovation of the Carreau du Temple was carried out between 2007 and 2014.
