The Château de la Bourdaisière of Montlouis sur Loire !!!

Let me tell you about a dandy in my road warrior rounds in the wonderful sublime Loire Valley. This is a spot have passed by several times but never in it until now; as the saying goes better late than never!, I came this week and took nice pictures for you and me. It was a great experience, and always looking forward to be back, eventually, This time let me tell you on the Château de la Bourdaisière of Montlouis sur Loire !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Montlouis-sur-Loire is located in the Indre-et-Loire department no 37 in the Centre-Val de Loire region of my belle France. It is located 12 km from Tours, 7 km from La Ville-aux-Dames, 12 km from Amboise, 238 km from Versailles, and 361 km from my current town, I came here from Amboise along the D751 road,

The Château de la Bourdaisière was built during the Renaissance. Largely destroyed in the 18C, the château was rebuilt from the late 18C to the early 19C. The park now houses several places for the conservation and cultivation of plants.

Before the construction of the château, a fortress belonging to several families existed on its site: Marie Gaudin, heir to La Bourdaisière; a high-flying courtesan, mistress of Francis I, Charles V, and, it is said, Pope Leo X. On April 28, 1510, she married Philibert Babou, superintendent of finances for Francis I, who thus became Lord of La Bourdaisière. Ten years later, in 1520, they decided to build a new castle on this site, retaining only one of the old medieval towers. It was in this castle that her great-granddaughter Gabrielle d’Estrées (favorite of Henry IV, and ancestor of Louis XV) and her seven sisters, also known for their role as courtesans, were born. On 16 November 1768, Marie-Charles-Louis d’Albert exchanged La Bourdaisière for Cinq-Mars with Étienne-François de Choiseul-Stainville, Duke of Amboise and master of Chanteloup: the famous minister of Louis XV retired to Chanteloup near Amboise after his disgrace in 1770. Choiseul ordered the demolition of the château in order to deprive his rival, the Duke of Aiguillon, of the view he had from his own château at Véretz. He also used the recovered stones for the construction of the Château de Chanteloup. Purchased by an Englishman in 1938, it was occupied by the nazis, then after the Liberation by a military school. It was then returned to its owners who left it abandoned. In 1959, after the auction of all the furniture, the castle was sold to the town of Montlouis sur Loire, which set up a retirement home there. On September 2, 1991, it was finally acquired by the Princes of Broglie. Louis Albert de Broglie developed a biodiversity laboratory there in the 1990s, including a collection of 700 varieties of tomatoes.
