The Church Sainte-Marie des Batignolles of Paris !!!

I am taken you back to Paris, yes a never ending story, The eternal city never stop amazing me of its beauty and things to see even if worked in it for almost 10 years while visiting zillion times living nearby in Versailles, Once again, found me older pictures in my cd rom vault ,that should be in my blog for you and me, These are wondertful architecture and historical gems glad to have them here. Therefore, here is my take again on the Church Sainte-Marie des Batignolles of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church Sainte-Marie des Batignolles is located at 77 Place du Docteur Felix Lobligeois in the 17éme arrondissement or district and in the quartier or neighborhood Batignolles of Paris. This site is served by the Brochant metro stations (line 13), Rome (line 2) and La Fourche (line 13). And bus line 66 arrêt/stop square des Batignolles as closer as well as train station Pont Cardinet line L, I used to come shopping Spanish grocery store Cap Hispania (see post) nearby and parked at Place Charles Fillon all around about a 7 minutes walk to the church and store.

The Church Sainte Marie des Batignolles current appearance dates from the mid-19C. It is in the neoclassical style. The church is shaped like a Greek temple. Its triangular pediment is supported by four columns. It is one of the few churches without a bell tower. However, it does have a bell, the Etiennette in a small campanile built in 1857.The church is inspired by the ancient Roman basilica. Its porch resembles that of a Greek temple. The interior bears the hallmarks of churches built during the Restoration, The church is a sober, almost austere church. Fortunately, a flat ceiling with painted compartments and a superb choir, in the 19C style, with a magnificent sculpted altarpiece, break up this sobriety and embellish the church.

The Chapel of the Virgin in the right apse with the baptistery with the portrait of the Virgin.

The great organ of the Church Sainte-Marie des Batignolles dates from 1923 and underwent two restorations in 1947 and 1994.

The stained glass windows of the nave shows the Adoration of the Magi, Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, The Holy Family, Visitation, Annunciation, Purification of Mary, The stained glass window of the transept shows Saint Joseph and Saint Charles Borromeo

The nearby Rue des Batignolles brings you to the neighborhood or quartier of Batignolles, which used to be an expanse of fields and vineyards until it was annexed to Paris in 1860. Although it is now a lively 17éme arrondissement or district filled with bars, restaurants and shops, it has retained its village feel, especially on Place du Dr Félix l’Obligeois, where you will find a pleasant square, charming terraces in the shade of plane trees, and a the small Church Sainte Marie des Batignolles, where locals gather to attend Mass.

A bit of history tell us that the village of Batignolles decided to build a small wooden chapel between 1826 and 1829 thanks to donations from king Charles X and the Duchess of Angoulême. The church took its name from Sainte-Marie des Batignolles in 1830 when Charles X created the new village of Batignolles-Monceau by separating it from the village of Clichy-la-Garenne. On April 2, 1841, the bishop blessed the statue of the Virgin and consecrated the two altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Vincent de Paul. Legend has it that a worker found a statuette of the Virgin during the foundation work. But it is safer to stick to the wishes of the Duchess of Angoulême who had wanted the dedication of the new church to be made to her patron saint, Mary of Nazareth.
