Paris is full of secret places, testimonies of the history of the city. Discovering them helps to better understand the past of it. Take the covered passages of Paris, for example. In the 19C, thanks to Baron Haussmann’s grand urban transformation plan, the city had more than 70! Let me give some definition ; what is a passage? Well best describe as a private lane open to the public, a shortcut between several lanes, whether it is covered or not. A pedestrian space, the passage can house both commerce and housing. Only the abundant decoration and the luxury of the shops differentiate a gallery from a passage. Today, the covered passages and their timeless charm have won back the hearts of Parisians who crowd alongside those that have been tastefully restored. While many of them have disappeared as the city has evolved, many other passages have survive. Read on some of my tales of those present in the beautiful City of Paris. The Passage des Panoramas is located by 10 rue Saint-Marc / 11 boulevard Montmartre / 38 rue Vivienne / 151 rue Montmartre 2éme arrondissement, Ending on the boulevard Montmartre with nice stores along pretty galleries such as Variétés, Saint Marc ,and Montmartre, Ending with the 146 rue Montmartre with a panel on the Cafe du Croissant, showing where was killled Jean Jaurés in July 31 1914. The Passage des Panoramas is one of the oldest covered passages in Paris as built in 1799, and undoubtedly the most authentic with its many lights and period decorations! Paris passage des Panoramas The Passage des Panoramas was the first covered passageway in Paris and one of the city’s most famous. That’s why it’s always busy. For philatelists, it’s one of Paris’s main philatelic hotspots, with numerous stores selling collector’s stamps. Once you’ve strolled through the Passage des Panoramas, you can continue your stroll through the Galerie des Variétés, which joins the Passage des Panoramas. For the record, it takes its name from the two panoramas, the illuminated rotundas that house a trompe-l’oeil fresco at the passage’s main entrance on Boulevard Montmartre. Unfortunately, both works were destroyed in 1831. In 1799, Thayer had the two towers built on the boulevard Montmartre in which he installed his panoramas. In order to facilitate access to the Royal Palace at the boulevard and attract customers to his “Machins en Rama”, he opened a passage that would shelter passers -by sheltered from rain and mud. The success of the passage was immediate thanks to the enthusiasm of the Parisians at the Panoramas, to its exceptional location on the boulevard and near the Bourse or Stock Exchange, and especially at the Théâtre des Varieties which came to by 1807. It still houses the store of the Alsatian engraver Stern, which dates from the beginning of the 19C. The « L’arbre à cannelle » or Cinnamon Tree tea room keeps the box ceiling and decorative elements of the former chocolate maker Marquis.
