The Bain des Pages, also named Piscine des Pages (pool), is a pool located in the Domaine du Château de Versailles. It is an old reservoir created under Louis XIV transformed into a swimming pool in the 19C and today attached to a company housing. One rare find of my Versailles that gladly share with the world, unique architecture and history of the Château de Versailles, sublime !!

Versailles Les Jambettes, l'ex-piscine avant Montbauron 21 rue saint honoré

The Bains des Pages pages were located on the edge of the Versailles estate, between the Petit Parc and the avenue de Trianon, a hundred meters from the Neptune basin and near the grille de Cérès grid. Bordered by high walls that run along the aisle leading to the Grand Trianon and hide its visibility from the outside, it is only accessible by a red brick pavilion, The water from the tanks was, at the time of Louis XIV, supplied by the Clagny pond. The clays of these basins were posed by a Flemish worker named Jean Bette, who died in 1667. He left his name to one of his works, in a corrupt form in « réservoir des Jambettes » or legs ; locals still refer by this French name, This basin was then fueled, according to the floor principle, by the wing reservoir, located rue des Reservoirs, and provided water from the lower basins, in particular the Rocher des Bains d’Apollo. It consisted in fact of two different sizes, one of oblong, the other more rectangular.

Napoleon III had, in 1854, to the redevelopment of the small park area, which he granted to the city of Versailles for his leisure activities, this one receiving a right on the chairs. At the same time, the city authorized swimming in the Grand Canal and founded an establishment of baths at the « réservoir des Jambettes à Trianon » or Trianon legs reservoir from the creation of this public establishment until the end of the Great War or WWI, the swimming pool of pages had opening days for men and others for women. In 1943, a renovation was undertaken and the cabins were restored which were repainted in green. But the success of the swimming pool required to open a more suitable place and more in line with hygiene and safety standards; The construction of the Montbauron swimming pool began in 1952 and the pages swimming pool was closed the following year, a second indoor swimming pool was made in Montbauron and inaugurated on April 26, 1969, The accommodation of the pavillon des Jambettes on which these two basins depend, renovated in 2009, was until 2011, available to the president of the public establishment of the Palace of Versailles, It is now as said private housing.
