The village of Veules-les-Roses is located by the sea, in the dept 76 of Seine-Maritime, in the Normandie region of my belle France. It is among “the most beautiful villages in France”. The village is located 7 km from Saint-Valery-en-Caux, 26 km from Dieppe, 65 km from Rouen, 194 km from Paris, 187 km from Versailles, and 465 km from my current home.

The first mention of the Church Saint Martin of Veules les Roses is in the charter of 1026 by which Duke Richard II confirms the property of the Abbey of Fécamp, there is nothing left of the church of that time. The church was rebuilt in the 13C, and disappeared again, with the exception of the bell tower, during the Hundred Years War. The current church was rebuilt between 1520 and 1612. The sacristy was added in the 19C, on the north side of the Chapel of the Virgin. It has three naves leaning against the bell tower. Some interesting statues are found there, Saint Martin, polychrome wood of the 16C, a Virgin and Child, known as Notre-Dame des Neiges, in polychrome stone of the 18C and an entombment of stone from the beginning of the 17C, Also, the 14 stations of the Cross in polychrome, And anonymous Nordic painting, Christ among the doctors ,first half of the 17C, the gallery and the organ buffet are 1628. The interior furniture and ornamentation are from the Renaissance era.

The vast dimensions ,42 meters in length, and the richness of the decor of the Church Saint-Martin are explained by its belonging to the powerful abbey of the Trinity of Fécamp. The powerful two -story bell tower, built in limestone, which rises between the nave and the choir dates from the start of the 13C, separated by a cord, the upper floor has four arcades falling on polygonal columns engaged in the wall. If the bell tower is homogeneous, it is not the same with the rest of the church built in sandstone. The choir, which may have used older elements, the main nave concerns one of its sandstones the date of 1528. Other works, around 1587, concern the entire bedside. The frames of the three naves were redone in 1609; In 1628, the organ games were repaired. With the exception of the square on which the bell tower is vaulted with warheads, the church is covered by wooden vaults in overturned hull. The collaterals are separated from the main nave by large arcades falling on batteries surmounted by capitals. Those from the South have received a rich carved decor, very complex.

In the recent renovation of old sections of the Church Saint Martin to restore its splendor of yesteryear to the church ; a technique called microsablage was used. The latter allowed a better highlighting of the different elements in stone, dating from the 16C. This is how ,they were able to discover the contribution of sculptors of Maya origin, whose graphic style is very recognizable. Among these characteristic elements, can identify caravels but also representations of Mayan deities. Indeed, despite the Spanish colonization, which converted them to Catholicism, the Mayans have kept a large part of their old beliefs. In addition, they used to sculpt their history and traditions in the steps of the stairs, in the lintels, in steles or pillars. Indeed, the walls of the church were brushed with lime, with yellow pigmentation. After the discovery of several frescoes dating from the 16C, a yellow background was revealed.
