A wonderful subject for me as lived in the city of Versailles by the Notre Dame Church for 9+ years before moving on to the Morbihan breton. Versailles will always be in our hearts, it was our first owned home in France! Go ahead and see the City ,but do not miss the palace/museum for anything as the Domaine of Versailles is awesome ! Let me tell you about the Salon du Mercure of the Château de Versailles !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Salon du Mercure or Mercury room or bedroom of the bed holding its name from the ceiling of Jean-Baptiste de Champaigne representing Mercury, God of Roman mythology, on his chariot. The room communicates to the Apollo room and to the Mars room. It is located on the first floor of the Palace , in the great apartments of the King. The Mercury room which was to serve as an anteroom, served as soon as the king entered the court in Versailles in 1682 of the ceremonial chamber, Louis XIV preferring to sleep in his small apartments. This parade room nevertheless retains the name of “bed bedroom”. This piece was only used three times to sleep: in 1685 for the marriage of the Duke of Bourbon, some time by Louis XIV during the repair of his room and during the proclamation of the Duke of Anjou as King of Spain in 1700, The bed on a platform, currently visible opposite the windows, is a bed at the Duchess type, commanded by Louis-Philippe in 1833, placed in the Mercury room in December 1998 , This bed is endowed with a big of Tours adorned with a switchboard of golden fringes. A solid silver balustrade of one ton framed the bed. It was melted with the rest of the silverware (mirrors, huge casseroles burning claude Ballin, solid silver chenets and chandeliers chiseled by the goldsmiths of the Gobelins) to fill the cases of the kingdom in 1689 in order to finance the war of the Augsburg League.

In an angle is placed the automata pendulum offered to Louis XIV in 1706. The chest of drawers of 1709, comes from the chamber of the King of the Trianon. On the walls covered with drapes, large damasy crimson palms there are two paintings: a portrait of Louis XV of Hyacinthe Rigaud dating from 1730 and a portrait of Marie Leszczinska by Louis Tocqué dating from 1740, above each door, other paintings are visible. They come from the Château de Meudon: Acis and Galatée by Michel Corneille and Apollo and Daphné de Antoine Coypel. The central part ceiling represents Mercury on a chariot pulled by two roosters. The vigilance which holds a crane as well as the loves which represent the arts and science accompany it. The morning star, represented by a love holding a trumpet and having a star on the head, precedes the chariot. The are the areas represent to northern Alexander the Great having Aristotle bring various foreign animals to write his natural history, to the east Alexander the Great receiving the announcement of the death of the philosopher Indian gymnosophist Calanos having been immolated by the late (Around 1672), to the south Ptolemy II Philadelphe spraying with Jewish scholars and being explained by the Bible of the Septuagint in the Library of Alexandria and finally the Emperor Augustus receiving a embassy of Indians offering him, among others, Tigers, animals still unknown to the Romans to the west. The Mercury Motor Show is restored in 2011 -2012, thanks to patronage,
