The Saint-Maurice Church of flamboyant Gothic style of the 15C and its paintings from the 15-16C. The Saint-François de Sales Church, Also, known as the Italian church,Pic across from the Thiou river in old town. Yes a bit blurry but its all I have thanks.
The château d’Annecy was built from the 12C to the 16C by the counts of Geneva, who lived there from 1219, it was bought by Savoy in 1401, to become the residence of the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours in the 16C, but also a barracks during the Spanish occupation at the end of the 17C it housed the Republican or Imperial armies, keeping this function until WWII. Today it houses the Castle-Museum or Musée d’art contemporain et d’art régional d’Annecy , and the Regional Observatory of the Alpine Lakes (ORLA) in the Tour and Logis Perrière.
The Pont des Amours, above the Canal du Vassé, connects the Jardins de l’Europe to the grazing ground, and represents the typical iron architecture from the beginning of the 20C.
Other interesting things to see amongst many me think are the former church of the Saint-Dominique convent, it became a parish in 1803. It was in this church that Saint Francis de Sales made its first communion and began to preach. It is also the church of Saint Jeanne de Chantal; the basilica of the Visitation of the 20C houses the tombs of Saint Francis de Sales and Saint Jeanne de Chantal and its esplanade offers a point of view on the whole city and the agglomeration , at avenue de la Visitation;
The city of Annecy has been the historical residence of the counts of Geneva in the 13C, then of the counts of Savoy in the 15C, the town became capital of the prerogative of Genevois and Faucigny in 1434. In 1536, the Calvinist reform of Geneva launched a counter-reform, transforming Annecy In Catholic bastion, which welcomes the Bishop of Geneva alongside François de Sales. In 1860, the Treaty of Turin annex the city to France.
It was not until the 11C to see the city be reborn at the foot of a defense tower built on the last counterfort of the Semnoz. A text of 1107 confirms the birth of Annecy-le-Neuf on the banks of Thiou and made a first mention of a Saint-Maurice Church under the Count Amédée III of Geneva from 1320 to 1367, date on which the franchises of Annecy are confirmed. The Countess Mahaut de Boulogne, wife of the count, gives birth to the last of the Counts of Geneva, Robert, to the castle of Annecy. This causes the great western schism by becoming Pope Clément VII, in residence in Avignon, After the death of Clément VII in 1394, the county of Geneva was acquired in 1401 by the Count of Savoy Amédée VIII. From 1536, during the triumph of the Calvinist reform in Geneva, the canons of the Saint-Pierre Cathedral settled in Annecy as well as Catholic religious orders as the Clarisses on October 5, 1600, at the end of the Franco- Savoyarde, Henri IV, after having invaded and conquered Savoy, enters Annecy, accompanied by Henri I of Savoie-Nemours, who joined him in 1594. He stayed three days in the city. As part of a vast movement of new orders, born from the Catholic reform, Annecy welcomed the Capuchins in 1592, the Visitandines in 1610, the Barnabites in 1614, the Annunciades de Saint Claude in 1638, the Bernardines reformed in 1639, the Lazarists in 1641, and the Cisterciennes de Bonlieu in 1648.
The ideas of the French revolution earn the local bourgeoisie by the Parisian Savoyards, the Encyclopedia, the writings of Voltaire and the Genevese Jean-Jacques Rousseau found in the private libraries of the notables, In 1797, under the Directory, the columns General Pouget mobiles chase the deserters and imprisoned priests, 70 of which are deported to Guyana. In 1815, a big party celebrated the reintegration of Annecy within the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia (the Dukes of Savoy having become kings of Sardinia around 1720). In 1822, the city, the capital of the province of Genevois, covered its episcopal seat with a diocese in its own name and no longer Geneva-Annecy. The resistance with the maquis of the Glières which liberated it on August 19, 1944. The war cross with star was pinned on the city coat of arms.
