Curiosities of Paris, part XIV !!!

We have driven and walked in my eternal Paris, and would like to have an imprint in my blog on the wonderful family times we had there, There is so much to see , doing my best, and glad found me these older paper pictures which now transposing in my blog for you and me, Most of the pictures are old ,except la Ruche, on the others quality may not be as good ,but the memories are forever, This was my former worked city, so glad to post more memorable spots on it, Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Paris , part XIV !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Cercle Clichy-Montmartre game room at 84 rue de Clichy still resists the various hassles that struck the other circles of Paris. They were as much as 20 ,and all disappeared one by one, for various and varied reasons, even the most famous and old of them, the Aviation Club de France (was there function!) . Discovery of the legendary spot and its magnificent Art Deco glass roof. Its original facade adorned with stucco columns, large red letters and playing cards. The room is magnificent and this is the decor worthy of a Hollywood black film. You can admire a breathtaking art deco canopy. The place has existed since the end of the 18C. In 1760, the farmer general of La Bouëxière made it a place of libertinism for high society. Then the establishment becomes in turn an amusement park and a popular restaurant at the beginning of the 20C. After WWII, the businessman Jean Bauchet made it a circle of games , the Cercle Clichy-Montmartre. The old bouillon or large brasserie created in 1901 was converted in the billiard academy and a circle of games in 1947. The Circle Clichy Montmartre is known worldwide lovers of billiards or poker for its many competitions.

In 1936, Henri Langlois, a visionary cinephile, created the Cinémathèque française in order to save from destruction silent films, then speaking and sound, but also the costumes, sets, posters and other treasures of cinema. He is one of the first to consider cinema as an art to be preserved, to restore and to show. Thanks to this precursor spirit, the institution has gathered, over the years, an impressive collection of films, archives and devices. There are represented almost all countries, from French, Italian, Soviet mute art to Hollywood classics, including experimental cinema and contemporary cinema and located since 2005 at 51, rue de Bercy, a building built in 1994 by Frank Gehry, to host the American Cultural Center. In France, it is the second oldest cinematheque.

La colonne Médicis, aka colonne de l’Horoscope or colonne astrologique, attached to the Bourse de commerce (old stock exchange), in the gardens of the Halles. This Creuse Doric column, was raised in 1574 on the orders of Catherine de Médicis in the courtyard of the Queen’s hotel that she has just ordered built. It was the first isolated column built in Paris, 31 meters high and 3 meters wide, it contains a spiral staircase of 147 steps which leads to a platform surmounted by a metal structure. A door then communicates it with the royal apartments. Probably, it also has a commemorative vocation, as notably attest to the letters H and C intertwined on the 18 grooves which adorn its circumference. They draw the monogram of Henri II and Catherine de Médicis. We observe however that it is the monogram of the queen, composed of a very differentiated H and C, and not that of the king, who inserts in his H of opposites to form the initial of his mistress Diane de Poitiers.

The Passsge de Dantzig is in the quartier/neighborhood of Vaugirard in the 15éme district/arrondissement of Paris. It is a sloping road that begins at 50, bis, rue de Dantzig and ends at 27, rue de la Saïda. It is so named because of its proximity to the rue de Dantzig, which takes its name in homage to the capture of this city in 1807 by the French army commanded by Marshal François Joseph Lefebvre following the siege of Dantzig. It was originally part of the “Chemin du Moulin” located in the village of Vaugirard and indicated on Roussel’s map of 1730. Attached to the Paris road network in 1863, the passage took its current name on December 10, 1878. Notable buildings here are at No. 2: La Ruche-Cité des Artistes. In 1916, the painter Pinchus Krémègne painted La Ruche vue de la fenêtre de l’atelier from the studio he occupied from 1912 to 1925. In 1993, the Spanish painter Eduardo Arroyo, in his homage to Soutine, who preceded him at La Ruche, depicted him in his studio. Arroyo himself was portrayed by the painter Herman Braun-Vega in 1979, in his studio through whose window we can see the plaque of the Passage de Dantzig. This passage has several townhouses with gardens. This city of artists nestled in the quartier/neighborhood Montparnasse was founded in 1902 by the sculptor Alfred Boucher. He was Camille Claudel’s first teacher begins to have small workshops built. Surrounded by gardens, an exhibition hall (the Ruche lounge) and a 300-seat theater (La Ruche des Arts) , After the death of Alfred Boucher, it falls in ruins. He installed the Rotonde, a former wine pavilion built by Eiffel for the 1900 Universal Exhibition, in the center. Among the first occupants were Léger, Soutine, Zadkine, Modigliani, Epstein… Saved from destruction in the 1970s, the Ruche still houses artists today. In addition, it now has an art exhibition hall l’Atelier Alfred Boucher workshop. The Ruche (hive) is undoubtedly one of the most famous place of artists in Paris. Indeed, it is a set of workshops that welcomes the best artists from around the world.

Although the Parc Monceau that we know today was revised in 1861, it is the heir to an older garden, that of the madness of Chartres. Dating from the 1770s and made in an English style, it housed many curiosities. among them, the wood of tombs and its pyramid! From the opening to the public of the parc Monceau in August 1861, the crowd rushed to observe this enigmatic monument, a replica of the Chéops pyramid. We even engraved pharao heads on the door. It was possible to go inside. Also, we can sit down on small stone benches. The park has many other wonders (see post) such as the Naumachie ,nearby stands a large arcade style Renaissance, relic of the Paris City Hall burnt down in 1871 , It has many marble statues of writers and musicians ;representing Maupassant, Verlet, Chopin, Gounod and Musset, Ambroise Thomas or Édouard Pailleron The park is surrounded by luxurious buildings and mansions arranged on 8.4 hectares and inaugurated on August 14, 1861 by Napoleon III, The streets will have to remain closed by gates; Families such as the Pereire, Rothschild, Cernuschi, Menier, Camondo will then built large mansions whose gardens give on the park, Claude Monet made six paintings in the park, three in 1876 and three in 1878.

These are some of the quant places of my Paris which I guess in those days was into taking their pictures !

The Metro line 2 (nation / Porte Dauphine), exit avenue Foch my favorite also RER C, avenue Foch station. The station has been corresponding to the T3B tram line since April 2024, This was my main entry point to Paris by car on Ave Foch to the Arc de Triomphe ! Sublime ! It was established under Place du Maréchal-de-Letre-de-Tassigny, opened on December 13, 1900 as western terminus of the first section of the Line 2 North , which will more simply become line 2 on October 17, 1907 This model B design with rounded shapes, the canopy is with a reverse double slope and is supported by three pillars: two at the front, and one in the center of the hopper on the back. The general aspect of this model earned it the nickname of the dragonfly. It is the only type B of origin that still remains, closed on three sides made up of enameled lava panels its name comes from the Dauphine Marie-Antoinette ,4th daughter of Marie-Thérèse and the emperor François 1e of Austria . She married the Dauphin Louis in 1770 who became king of France under the name of Louis XVI in 1774.

This Facade of 97bis, rue de Crimée show two Atlanteans with the protruding muscles seeming to work on the third floor balcony, this is what the facade of the building gives us the junction between the rue de Crimée and rue Meynadier. One of the men handles the chisel, while the other seems to apply cement with a trowel, two unusual positions for such ornament statues. This street was initially called Gymnase d’Allemagne, it changed his name after the war at the same time as the rue d’Allemagne which becomes avenue Jean-Jaurès.

The Egyptian heads of the passage du Caire,is a fine example of “unclassifiable” statues because more exotic than the others, the incongruous Egyptian faces of the building of the passage of Cairo can only attract our attention! They pay tribute to Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt. The whole building is a pastiche combining neo -gothic influence and Egyptomania.

High of 3 floors, the caryatid on rue de Turbigo is the most intriguing in Paris: no one knows what this immense statue draped in the ancient is there! We can just observe that she holds in her left hand of the myrrh and in her right hand a small scholarship, which would make her a symbol of charity. It was Auguste Emile Delange, who proposed the drawing in 1851 in the Beaux-Arts competition. It is located at 57 rue de Turbigo.
