The Palais de la Découverte of Paris !!

I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I found me new things not yet in my blog that should be, This is the case lately of finding old paper pictures in my vault , and Paris is a huge part of it. I have written on many monuments of Paris ; this is another nice one to see on its temporary location and looking forward myself to see it open again on june 6 2025 ; worth the detour, me think, Therefore, here is my take on the Palais de la Découverte of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Palais de la Découverte is a scientific museum installed since 1937 in the western wing of the Grand Palais,(see posts) in the 8éme arrondissement and whose missions are to present, by means of educational demonstrations and exhibitions, astronomical, biological, chemical sciences , Geological, medical, mathematics and physical, in order to arouse vocations. It offers many free access and animated workshops spaces to concretely test different experiences around science. Here, children and adults have the right to touch, participate, experience, like real scientists! In the Salle des Sciences de la vie, for example, you will discover the modes of communication of animals, but also the magic of human biology. Learn to code in the computer space and digital sciences, or to investigate terrestrial and meteorological phenomena in the geoscience room. And put yourself in the shoes of a chemist or a perfumer in the astonishing chemistry room. You will finally reconcile with mathematics thanks to workshops on symmetry or fractal geometry. The physics rooms will put your hair on your head on electromagnetism space and, if you think it is impossible to observe the stars in broad daylight, take a tour of the planetarium, the oldest in France. In addition to permanent exhibitions, conferences and workshops, temporary exhibitions allow you to deepen a subject in one of the museum’s areas of expertise. A cafeteria is at your disposal for a well-deserved break, before going to the palace bookstore-boutique.

After more than 80 years of success, the Palais de la Découverte opened a new page in its history in 2020 by engaging in its first big renovation. It will reopen its doors on June 6, 2025. The Science Museum will reopens its doors with a festival and a temporary exhibition dedicated to artificial intelligence. The youngest will also be able to discover the Children’s Palace with the Transparency exhibition. The permanent collections, the planetarium and the laboratories will not reopen until 2026. Thus, five scientific laboratories will allow us to test, explore and live scientific experiences around IT, living and science. Islands of thematic curiosities will offer mini-exhibitions around research or scientific news. Large thematic rooms, new or iconic, will approach different universes such as space, the equatorial garden, the electricity room … all equipped with interactive digital devices. Children are also welcome, with a new space of 620 m² specially designed for them. There, game, science and art mix to entertain and satisfy the curiosity of the youngest. In renovation until June 6 2025, part of its activities continued in sparks, at 186 rue Saint-Charles, in the 15éme arrondissement , scientific mediations and a planetarium mainly intended for school groups are offered in a structure Ephemeral installed in the parc André Citroën ; baptized “Les Étincelles”, it consists of 6 wooden tents on 770 m2. A traveling exhibition of 300 m2 is also planned in conjunction with online resources.

A bit of history tell us that in 1934, André Léveillé and Jean Perrin, Nobel Prize in Physics, developed a preliminary project of scientific museum which was born within the Universal Exhibition of 1937 as a temporary museum called “The Palais de la Découverte” and installed in the western wing (the former Palais d’Antin) current Grand Palais, By the decree of April 8, 1938 which linked it to the Caisse Nationale des Sciences ,and on January 9, 1940, a new decree linked it this time to the University of Paris ; then since January 1, 2010, the Palais de la Découverte and the Cité des Sciences et Industries are grouped within a common group called Universcience.
