I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I found me new things not yet in my blog that should be, This is the case lately of finding old paper pictures in my vault , and Paris is a huge part of it. I have written on many of the bridges of Paris this is another nice one to walk over it at least once in your lifetime, Therefore, here is my take on the Pont Marie of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Pont Marie bridge crosses the Seine river in Paris. It connects Île Saint-Louis to the Quai de l’Hôtel-de-Ville in the 4éme arrondissement. Upstream of the Pont Louis Philippe and downstream from the Pont Sully. The five arches that compose it are different. The Pont Marie constitutes the kilometer point 0 for the part of the Seine located downstream of the bridge (the part upstream having its kilometer point 0 at Marcilly-sur-Seine, Marne dept 51 Grand Est region), The total length is about 92 meters between abutments, width of the beam of the deck 22.60 meters,: roadway 14.60 meters two sidewalks of 4 meters. The avant-becs are surmounted by niches, always remained empty of statues. The Pont Marie owes its name to the engineer-entrepreneur Christophe Marie. This bridge dates from the 17C, making it one of the oldest bridges in Paris.

A bit of history I like tell us that in 1577, the President of Accounts and the Provost of the Merchants had the idea of building a bridge to link the former ïle Notre-Dame island and the Ïle aux Vaches, on the initiative of Christophe Marie. This one proposed to the King to build a wooden bridge in 1608 to connect the Quai Saint-Paul to that of the Quai Tournelle From 1611, the city office intervened and changed the project into two stone works in stone, the Pont Marie and the Pont des Tournelle. The first stone was laid on October 11, 1614 by Louis XIII and his mother Marie de Médicis. The bridge was finished in 1635. In 1643, houses were built on the Marie bridge, 25 on each side of the bridge and 36 on the quay on the right bank, upstream and downstream of the bridge, on both sides of the rue des Nonnains-d’Hyères , two wings, quai Saint-Paul, towards the east, Quai des Ormes to the west. On March 1, 1658, the Seine flood ,and almost took the bridge. In 1660, a wooden bridge restored traffic. Stone construction only started in 1667, the houses were not rebuilt. From 1726, Île Notre-Dame will take the name of Île Saint-Louis as we know it today, In 1769, house construction on bridges was prohibited ,and by the end of 1788, and the beginning of 1789, the bridge was completely rid of houses, The Pont Marie was restored on July 31, 1852 ; an automatic signaling was installed in 1936. A restoration by replacement of the stones was made in 1942.
Do see at the Musée Carnavalet of the City of Paris the painting by the Italian hyperrealist painter Paolo Intini representing the Pont Marie.
