Notre Dame Cathedral update APR2024 !!!

And time to come back to this wonderful epic work going on in my eternal Paris. I have follow thru on the reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral since its unfortunate fire on April 2019. There are several posts on the work going on in my blog; and feels it needs another update. Therefore, without further words here is the Notre Dame Cathedral update for APR2024 !!! From the beginning I had full faith it will be done and it will stay tune December 8 2024 we are marching on, Allez les Bleus !!!

Work is speeding up and all are very positive about reaching their goal, great !! The reopening of Notre-Dame is scheduled for December 8, 2024, after the Paris Olympics in the summer, a date confirmed by Emmanuel Macron.

The Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris continues its reconstruction. In the choir the scaffolding is gradually removed. The great organ is again visible from the nave, revealing at the same time the extraordinary colors of the western rosary. A bouquet came to symbolize the end of the installation of the medieval frame of the choir on January 12, 2024. The arrow found its place in the Paris sky: its massive oak frame is surmounted by the crown and the golden cross in accordance with original drawing of Viollet-le-Duc. In a few days, the rooster placed at the top, completing the elevation of the arrow 96 meters high. Anchored 30 meters from the ground, above the transept crossroads, this framework masterpiece is a complex tangle of around 1000 pieces of wood. Beforehand, the arrow had been cut by the carpenters in the workshop, in Lorraine, and successfully climbed.

At the same time, the entire site experiences significant advances in other areas: the frames of the two arms of the transept are finished. Above the vaults of the restored nave and choir, the assembly of the “forest” of Notre-Dame-the frames rebuilt according to the medieval drawing-is in the process of completion. The restoration of the three gables-north, south and west-is finished and the monumental statues of Christ and Saint-Denis, restored in the workshop, have already been able to find their place at the top of the south and north gables. Above the vaults of the nave and the restored choir began the assembly of the hundred farms of the massive oak frame , rebuilt according to the medieval drawing. Brought by the Seine, the frames of the two arms of the transept, also in solid oak, rebuilt according to their 19C drawing, also progressed very visibly. They find their place between the large north and south gables, rebuilt in carved stone.

Regarding liturgical furniture, it will be installed during the fall of 2024. 1,500 chairs in solid oak should fill the cathedral at the same time announced the creation of a “museum of the work of Notre-Dame de Paris”, To know everything about “History and art” of the cathedral but also of the Hotel-Dieu opposite because it is there that the museum should see the light of day and house the old rooster and the old stained glass windows .

Started in previous months, cleaning and restoration work of the interior of the cathedral ends, as is the restoration of masonry and collapsed vaults, mobilizing a number of companies from all over France, and from a wide variety of trades and know-how, Thus, to date, the whole fence of choir, a sculpted masterpiece of the 14C, is cleaned and restored, as well as the decorations of the sacristy. After the reopening, phase 3 of the site will start and new catering works will be launched. They will last “beyond 2025” according to the Élysée and will aim to put the exterior of the cathedral in harmony with the interior during the reopening will last several months during which the hundreds of Craftsmen who worked on the site, donors and church representatives, French and foreign will be there at the end on Pentecost day on June 8, 2025. The unusual restoration site of the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris was funded thanks to the generosity of 340,000 donors from 150 countries, which made it possible to collect 846 million euros in donations, THANK YOU ALL !!!

What about the areas around the Notre Dame Cathedral ? The new parvis or forecourt is designed as a clearing, which highlights the eastern facade of Notre-Dame in a vegetable setting. The trees around will offer foundations in the shade, while a fine blade of water of 5 millimeters high will occasionally run to refresh the parvis in times of hot weather, creating ephemeral reflections. The space behind the cathedral, as large as the parvis in front, today divided by hedges and fences, will become a large continuous square between the bedside and the Seine river around a generous lawn which opens on the bouting arches and stained glass. The gardens south of the cathedral, as well as the existing trees, will be integrated into a large park of the banks 400 meters long. In total, 131 new trees will be planted. The old underground car park, located under the current forecourt, will be transformed into an interior walk. It will house Notre-Dame reception spaces on 3000 m2 (luggage, health, rooms for groups, etc.) and will offer new experiences to visitors: new access to the archaeological crypt and an opening on the Seine river. The new development will also allow new views of the cathedral. Another novelty: rue du Cloître will be cleared and vegetated.
