Parliament Square et al of London !!!

Of course, we walked all over London and use the underground and double decker buses to boot, all glorious as was able to come with the family and not just my business trips.  We enjoyed the trip here with the family, and now it brings lots of good memories for me. I have written many posts on the City before, but found me again older pictures not in my blog yet and they should be, Therefore, here is my take on the Parliament square et al of London !!! Hope you enjoy it as I

Parliament Square is located at the end of the Palace of Westminster in the City of Westminster in central London. Laid out in the 19C, it features a large open green area in the centre with trees to its west, and it contains twelve statues of statesmen and other notable individuals. The square is overlooked by various official buildings such as the churches Westminster Abbey and St Margaret’s, Westminster, the Middlesex Guildhall which is the seat of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Government Offices Great George Street serving HM Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs, and Portcullis House. Roads that branch off the Parliament Square are St Margaret Street (towards Millbank), Broad Sanctuary (towards Victoria Street), Great George Street (towards Birdcage Walk), Parliament Street (leading into Whitehall) and Bridge Street (leading onto Westminster Bridge). Parliament Square was laid out in 1868 in order to open up the space around the Palace of Westminster and improve traffic flow, and featured London’s first traffic signals.

The George Canning statue originally erected in New Palace Yard; in its current location since 1949. The features are based on the portrait bust of Canning by Sir Francis ChantreyGeorge Canning was a British Tory statesman. He held various senior cabinet positions under numerous prime ministers, including two important terms as Foreign Secretary, finally becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for the last 119 days of his life, from April to August 1827.

The Abraham Lincoln statue is a recasting of the statue in Lincoln ParkChicago. This statue was unveiled by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, after being ceremonially presented by the American ambassador and accepted by Prime Minister David Lloyd George. Initially the statue was to be erected in 1914, but this was postponed. Abraham Lincoln was an American lawyer, politician, and statesman who served as the 16th  president of the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865. Lincoln led the United States through the American Civil War, defending the nation as a constitutional  union, defeating the insurgent Confederacyabolishing slavery, expanding the power of the federal government, and modernizing the U.S. economy.

The main monument you see in the picture is the St. Margaret’s Church, located within the grounds of Westminster Abbey on Parliament Square. It is the parish church of the Palace of Westminster. It is dedicated to Marguerite of Antioch. Originally founded in the 12C by the Benedictine order so that the local population living around the abbey could pray individually, in a simpler and more personal parish church, the Saint Margaret’s Church was rebuilt from 1486 to 1523, It became the parish church of the Palace of Westminster in 1614, when the Puritans of the 17C, dissatisfied with the abbey considered too liturgical, chose to celebrate parliamentary services in the Church Saint-Margaret, supposed to be more appropriate. Since that time, the custom has persisted. The pastor of St. Margaret’s Church is a canon of Westminster Abbey.
