On my road warrior trips to wonderful sublime Bordeaux: Oh yes is a lot more than the city to us!! Going into wine country you see other wonderful sites worth the detour, me think. One of these is Cussac-Fort Médoc, and we love it !!!. I found me a personal picture that describe it more ,see my other post more on the wines in my blog. This is Cussac-Fort Médoc !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The town of Cussac-Fort-Médoc is located in the Gironde department 33, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of my belle France. It is on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, facing the town of Blaye, and 37 km from Bordeaux, As far wine is concern the town is in the Haut Médoc appelation, I like to tell you a bit more on Cussac-Fort Médoc a town we have visited several times for the wines but needs more time for the rest of wonderful monuments it has.
The Château Lanessan its cellars, its farm, its stables and its water tower belong to one and the same family since 1793!! For eight generations, the Bouteiller family has exploited this 80 ha vineyard in one piece, rather rare in the region, surrounded by a 145 ha of forest lands. This is where we have been for the wines, the carriage museum and the thrill of traditions in wine country, Nice carriage rides are performed within the property awesome !

Things to see here with time are the Church of Saint-Symphorien. While waiting for the current church to be built, worship took place in the cellars of Château Aney which were rented for this purpose. Authorization to build was given on April 15, 1859. The stones came from Bourg and were cut in Cussac. The work was accelerated and, on All Saints’ Day 1860, worship took place in the church. The work was obviously completed subsequently, already its 35 meter spire stood in the sky, The Château La Chesnaye-Sainte-Gemme, The Château Beaumont, occupies the site of an old noble house which belonged to the Marquis d’ Cheerful. Also, the castles of Bernones, du Rau, de Lamothe, de Camino-Salva, de Romefort and d’Aney,
Other than wine, the next thing to see here with time is the Fort Médoc built during the reign of Louis XIV from 1689 ; the king took the decision to build the fort Cussac to protect Bordeaux from possible enemy maritime attacks. This fort will be located within the fortified system designed by Vauban in the Gironde estuary, comprising the Blaye citadel and the Fort Paté. The whole represents a total area of approximately 24 hectares , The Fort Cussac is a simple enlarged square plan with four bastions, bastions of the Sea, of the Dauphin, of France and of the King connected by curtains, all flanked by a covered path and a grassy glacis. He thus transformed the medieval enclosure by systematically reusing pre-existing structures without this being visible. On the other side of the bank, the engineer had a square fort built ex nihilo, Fort Médoc, on marshy land, forcing him to only erect palisaded earth defenses. The three rooms of the guardhouse will be used to host temporary exhibitions or events (rooms made available to artists, associations or companies). The Fort Médoc is a member of the Network of major Vauban sites. Since 2008, the Fort Médoc has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A bit of history I like tell us that Cussac was also the capital of an ancient barony which was attached to that of Castelnau. Very high and powerful prince, the Duke of Glaucestre, is described as lord of the place and the castle of Cussac, in a title of March 19, 1441. In the following century, the lordship of Cussac was in the power of the house of Foix.
