The rue Haute of Honfleur !!!

I am again looking at old posts and realise should have one on this wonderful memorable street walked on it zillions of times over the years, You know Honfleur is very special sentimentally for me but is also, the 2nd most visited site in all of Normandy !! (behind MSM) Let me tell you a bit about the sights , history ,and street of rue Haute of Honfleur !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The street is located downstream from the Sainte Catherine district and the Côte de Grace. It connects the historic and shopping center located near the Lieutenancy and the Sainte Catherine Church, to the more residential district of the Hospital lighthouse. (see all posts) , With its 400 meters long and only 3 meters of traffic lane, it remains narrow,,hah yes indeed just enough for my car ! However, work was going on for several weeks on Rue Haute, sandstone paving stones are gradually taking place to replace the asphalt. The provenance of the reclaimed paving stones (Versailles sandstone) allows the historic and typically Norman character of the place to be preserved. It should be done by the time you see this post.

The rue Haute was the site where it was a Roman road. Legend has it that Julius Caesar embarked in 55-54 BC from the Honfleur coast to conquer Brittany (now England). Called “Vicus regis” (royal road in the Middle Ages), it took the name of Haute rue from 1410. A strange name when we look at the topography of Honfleur and which suggests, on the contrary, that it is one of the lowest in the city. Exact ! But you have to position yourself in relation to the sea and not to the land! Thus, it owes its name to the fact that it is high compared to the waters of the estuary which, until the beginning of the 20C, beat at the foot of the houses.

The houses to look at here are the one at 28 rue Haute dates from the second quarter of the 16C more precisely 1540. The house is half-timbered and stone-built and has a corbel. Also, the house at 15 rue Haute, dates from the 16C or even from the 15C. The house is half-timbered and in stone. Equipped with corbels, the house has sculptures on its sand pits, vines, human faces and animals. At numbers 50-52 is the house which belonged to Pierre de Chauvin, captain of the Royal Navy, founder in 1600 of the village of Tadoussac, in Canada. They bear witness to the architectural richness of the street.

  1. I visited Honfleur during my stay in Normandy several years ago, and even though I only had a day in town, I was charmed by its colorful port and quaint little streets. I would’ve loved to have visited the Maisons Satie to see where Erik Satie was born and raised. Another time!
