The National Roman Museum’s mission is the acquisition, conservation, valorization and use of a unique cultural heritage in the world. This exceptional testimony to the past is promoted and developed by the National Roman Museum, projecting the sense of historical continuity into the future The Museo Nazionale Romano  was established in 1889 as the archaeological museum of Rome. The first location of this museum was in the monastic complex “Santa Maria degli Angeli”, on the complex of the Baths of Diocletian. As the collection outgrew the museum, three locations were added to display the collection, namely Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Palazzo Altemps and Crypta Balbi,

.In the 19C building of Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, you find four floors with ancient art dating from the 2C BC to the 5C AD. It is located at Largo di Villa Peretti, 2,

Between 292 and 306, AD , the Baths of Diocletian were built. In the 16C a church and a monastic complex were built in part of the thermal baths. The collection mainly includes several statues in marble and bronze. You can also admire part of the grounds of the largest thermal baths from Roman times. The main monastery was built according to Michelangelo’s design and the gallery had 100 meter facades with 100 columns each,

The Palazzo Altemps, not far from the Piazza Navona, contains works from famous collections of ancient sculptures that belong to families of the Roman nobility. The palace was named in homage to Cardinal Marcus Sitticus Altemps, who owned this building. Part of the original Altemps collection of16 statues can still be admired with another part, however, has moved to the Vatican. The museum also houses the Ludovisi-Boncompagni family collection, the Mattei collection and an Egyptian collection. The statues are arranged in this palace in a typical 17C fashion, It is located at Piazza Sant’Apollinare 46-48,

On the site of the Crypta Balbi, there was once the theater of Balbus (13C BC) which was located on the Champ de Mars. This museum contains finds that were unearthed at this archaeological site. In addition, the museum has an exhibition on Rome, ranging from the 5C to the Early Middle Ages , It is located at Via delle Botteghe Oscure, 31.
