The great Mercado Central or market is almost like a shopping center/Mall,located at Av. Alberto Nepomuceno, 199 – Centro, It is open Monday to Saturday from 9h to 17h and Sundays from 8h to 13h.
The market got its start as a meat, fruit, and vegetable market housed in a small wooden building in 1809. In 1931 the government prohibited the sale of meat and produce within the market, so the industry was forced to shift to crafts. On January 19, 1998, the new Mercado Central or Central Market building was inaugurated, to include better facilities and more space for vendors operating on Avenida Alberto Nepomuceno. The new market houses 553 boxes, distributed over 5 floors, one of which is intended for parking, comprising a total area of 9,691 square meters of built area. Today, leather goods (sandals, shoes, hats, bags and suitcases), lace and embroidery on clothes and bedding, table and bath items, bobbin lace, t-shirts, souvenirs such as mini-rafts, costume jewelry, gold jewelry, decorative items, among many other items.

The Mercado Central is one of the best places to visit if you want to know the traditions and culture of Fortaleza. In the 553 stalls spread over the four floors of the market, you will find all kinds of crafts from the region, from clay pieces with Ceará folklore symbols, to towels and other hand-embroidered fabrics. Products such as castalha-de-caju and cachaças, manufactured in the region, are for sale in the market. Without a doubt it is worth knowing it and taking the opportunity to buy souvenirs for the family. The market has parking, which makes life easier for those who visit the city by car like me. Most city sightseeing tours include a stop at the market with time for shopping, along with visits to other notable attractions,
