The Former Coney Island of Havana !!!

I was looking again at my blog and realise have a wonderful old pictures of a loving spot my dear late mom Gladys used to take me as a boy in our dear Havana, I like to tell you about a nostalgic spot no longer available but deep in my memories of always, Let me tell you a bit about the former Coney Island of Havana !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Inspired by a large amusement park created in Brooklyn NYC in the first half of the 19C,and still going strong, the Coney Island of Havana was inaugurated on December 5 1918. Today it is known as the Isla del Coco , but nothing remains of its original attractions. Four years later, the elegant La Concha Spa was opened to the public, now gone too as almost everything on the revolutionary island, The park was between 5th and 3rd Avenues old Miramar today Playa. The Coney Island was very well connected and covered an extensive area from Fifth Avenue to La Concha Beach. Around it you could find various restaurants and stalls of all kinds. Some attractions in the park were famous, among which its great Roller Coaster, the House of Crystals and the Star stood out. It was a memorable place where love, fantasies and even disappointments arose. I was there can say it with sadness and nostalgia of a time gone by.

In the 1980s it was modestly remodeled and Japanese equipment and board games were installed, but even so it could not stand the test of time. The attractions ceased to be and they were rusting in the oblivion of the people. While the Coney Island was disappearing until it was an annoying place on the side of 5th Avenue or Quita Avenida. In 2005, the final enchantment over Coney Island took place ,a new project resurfaces on the ruins: Isla del Coco , Therefore, Coney Island was renamed La Isla del Coco, inspired by the fantastic world of Captain Plin. The dolls in the park, as well as the 20 installed devices, were built in China and assembled in Cuba, and the park reopened in 2008. Since then it has been closed for repairs at various periods.

Coney Island introduced us to devices such as the roller coaster, the plane of love, the large star and others, which made it the favorite of children, young people and adults. But the hot dogs, cotton candy, churros and other delicacies, together with the adrenaline caused by the devices we rode, were well worth the adventure. Havana’s Coney Island earned the fame of being among the most famous attractions in Latin America.

There you go folks, another nostalgic spot in my life and happy to be able to share it with the world. Havana goes deep with me, even if now is a distant star flicking for survival, Glad to have this piece of nostalgia in my blog for the future of never forget , Again, hope you enjoy the post on the Coney Island of Havana as I

And remember, happy travels, good health, and many cheers to all !!!

  1. At the entrance to this Coney Island in Havana there was a huge (@20 ft high?) laughing statue of I guess a woman dressed in clown costume, which for some reason was a replica of the same at the entrance to some Roman attraction, 1910s or so. Respighi @ 2:15 Roman Festivals VI. Epiphany has a trombone imitate it in a short solo. Who is old enough to remember the one in Cuba?
