In my early travels of my life, the intensity was gear towards Latin America big cities as was closer, and fewer pictures…. And later base in France, the trips were done to other smaller towns all over Brazil, These were newer towns and first experiences to gather more in the knowledge of the country I came to know well and speak the language even living there for a while, My adreline visit to Niteroi across the bay of Guanabara from Rio de Janeiro met the case. I found some personal pics of this adventure , and should be in my blog on a post of its own, Therefore, here is my take on this is Niteroi, Brazil !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

Niterói is a city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The city is located on the eastern side of the entrance to Guanabara Bay, facing Rio de Janeiro, 13 km distant, to which it is connected by the Ponte Rio-Niterói bridge and a catamaran service, which I came by car over the bridge, Niteroi is ultimately a miniature Rio, between its beaches, its hills and its lagoons, the resemblance is disturbing. The Parque da Cidade with its view of the entire bay, it feels like having a huge 3D map unfolding at our feet ! From the park, 2 launching ramps allow the practice of paragliding or hang-gliding,which I dare did in those days.

 However, as said for me was a trip to paragliding off Niteroi, and this was the place ! You can do the paragliding tandem flight in the Parque Da Ciudade of Niteroi (city park) The viewpoint from up there will blow your mind From a viewpoint to the left, a paragliding platform looks out over the lakes and beaches on the Atlantic coast. But, on the right, a panorama of staggering beauty unfolds before you. The whole of Rio de Janeiro’s west-facing skyline can be seen – from the high rises of Copacabana on the left to the islands beyond the Rio Niteroi bridge to the right. And, in the foreground, the bay is pockmarked with fishing boats, yachts and ferries. Briefly, Niteroi was the village of São Lourenço dos Índios was recognized by the central government and given the new name of Vila Real da Praia Grande in 1819. On March 6, 1835, Vila Real da Praia Grande was officially renamed Niterói, It is 13 km from Rio link by the Rio-Niteroi bridge and a catamarans service.

The other things to see there are the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), shaped like an abandoned flying saucer and accessed via a snaking walkway paved in red housed in a building built by Oscar Niemeyer. For an anecdote, Niteroi is the birthplace of Leonardo Nascimento de Araújo, footballer and former player and sporting director of Paris Saint Germain (PSG).  The Mercado Sâo Pedro is the largest fish market in Rio de Janeiro state you can buy your catch from downstairs and make your way to one of the restaurants upstairs where they’ll cook it for you for a nominal fee, The Caminho Niemeyer is home to the modernist concrete curves of the Teatro Popular and other buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the famous Brazilian architect. They’re a bit of an acquired taste, but Niemeyer’s work can be seen elsewhere in Niteroi, too. Including the Charitas ferry terminal and the Reserva Cultural Niteroi, a cinema and event complex. The best areas for shopping and beach time, me think is  Icarai, Niteroi’s boutique shopping area. Most of the shops run adjacent to and one block back from the promenade and Icarai beach. The beach itself is white powder for the most part, and there are generally plenty of sports going on.  However, do not swim as was polluted last I check, On weekends, Campo de Sao Bento is a park situated four blocks back from the centre of Icarai beach. There you’ll find a weekend market with handicrafts and regional hot and cold food. For swimming better go to Praia Itacoatiara beach which boasts gorgeous white powder sand, surfing waves and a dramatic backdrop of jagged cliffs.
