My personal curiosities of Saint Germain en Laye !!!

I like to tell you further about a lovely town I like a lot and lucky enough to lived next to it for 9 + years. The wonderful Royal town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye in the department 78 Yvelines, region of Île de France of my belle France. Many memories with the family here on its castle museum and especially the open market with a nice quant city center, I like to tell you more of my personal curiosities of Saint Germain en Laye !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I,

The market is second only to Versailles in the region in my opinion, very nice at the Place du Marché Neuf ,on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8h30-13h – Sundays from 8h30-13h30. The plaza is gorgeous and many nice shops around its quant nice City center.  You can, also, shop in over 850 stores in city center, one of the largest choices in the whole region, even better than Versailles. In 1776, the Old Market was moved along the Rue de Poissy to a large square created on the old cemetery: Place du Marché-Neuf. We have come here for this flea market still going strong and very lively, My ocassion was to trade my travel post cards which still have about a 1000 from many countries ; at the time here had over 4K from 76 countries ! The 31ème édition de la Brocante de Fourqueux was held this past Sunday June 4 from 8h30 to 18h at the espace Pierre Delanoe, 2 place Victor Hugo.  Also, last Saturday/Sunday June 3-4 at the parc Eglise Saint-Léger, 20 rue de la Maison Verte.

Saint-Germain-en-Laye is one of the most interesting historic towns around Paris. It has retained its old urban fabric, inherited from the Middle Ages, its curved streets and dead ends dating back to times prior to the 17C, Indeed a walker paradise of history and architecture ! One of the most quant streets is the Rue au Pain !! Here with visiting friends from Florida USA, and my dear late wife Martine.

The main thing here and one have not given enough credit me think so here is a bit more, The museum to the glory of the famous composer Claude Debussy at 38 rue au Pain, The native home of Claude-Debussy was closed for renovations on October 31, 2021. It planned to reopened for 2023 on the occasion of European Heritage Days (this is by Sept 17-19 2023). A unique place, bringing together all the objects associated with the famous French composer in the house where he was born It was in this 17C house, owned by the city, that Claude Debussy was born on August 22, 1862 and spent his early childhood. His father indeed had a business of earthenware on the ground floor , It very quickly became at his death in 1918 the main meeting place for all his admirers

Also, some stores remember had patronise were the Boulangerie Rue Au Pain at no 77 ,Father and Sons at no 1, Patisserie Grandin at no, 13, who has been creating wonders evoking the region and its history since 1822, Nicolsen Chocotalier at no, 19, Pharmacie du Château at no 35, and Armand Thiery at no 58.
