This was a find on a previous passing thru and now finally in town, I like to tell you about the marvels of quant old Pont-L’Evêque. The town of Pont-l’Evêque is in the department of Calvados no 14 of the region of Normandie in my belle France. I came along the D579 road from Honfleur, this time, See my other post on the town in my blog, Let me tell you about the Church Saint Melaine of Pont l’Evêque.Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Church Saint Melaine, at rue Saint-Melaine on the road to Trouville, The church has a simple oriented nave. There are two parts: a nave with two bays and a choir with two bays ending in a flat apse. an annex is attached to the north gutter wall of the choir. The western facade develops on a gable wall framed by buttresses and divided into two parts by a buttress placed in the center. The entrance is through a semicircular opening pierced on the south side while a semicircular bay is present on the north side. The facade is dominated by a bell tower with a pyramidal roof surmounted by a ridge cross which is placed on the roof. The southern gutter wall of the nave is pierced with rectangular bays. Buttresses are placed between the openings of the nave as well as at the end of the apse. The northern gutter wall is pierced by two lancets at the ends of the nave. The western lancet is blocked. The apse of the church is pierced by a semi-circular bay.
This church dates from the 13C. Saint Melaine, born around 456 and died around 530 was bishop of Rennes from 505. His popularity is linked to the miracles that would have occurred during his life and after his death. Indeed, while his body is transported on the Vilaine river towards Rennes, a breach is widened during the passage of his boat, thieves locked up in a tower are freed, or even prisoners see their chains fall .There a Stele tribute to the victims of the June 6, 1944 bombing outside next to the church,
