This time took my road warrior skills to go again to jolly England with the Le Shuttle train service (see post), and my Ford ; towing along my good boys and wonderful Rex! It was a very nice trip going into the countryside and seeing several towns of wonderul architecture and history, This one is a must and one of our highlights of the trip, we will be back, eventually, Therefore, let me tell you about  this is Amersham, England !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Amersham is located in Buckinghamshire district of England, It has a railway station and, also served by the London Underground (metro/subway). Since 1961, this line has terminated at this station. It is in the Chiltern Hills, 27 miles (43 km) from London, 15 miles (24 km) from Aylesbury and 9 miles (14 km) from High Wycombe. Amersham is part of the London commuter belt. The town is located at the junction of the A355 from Slough and Beaconsfield, the A404 linking Maidenhead,High Wycombe and Rickmansworth, the A416 from Chesham and Berkhamsted and the A413 roadAmersham is signed from both the M25 at junction/exit 18, and M40  at junctions/exits 1 and 2.

There are two distinct areas: Old Amersham, set in the valley of the Misbourne river, containing the 13C parish Church of St Mary’s and several old pubs and coaching inns, and the Amersham-on-the-Hill, which grew in the early 20C around Amersham train station, which was served by the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan line) and the Great Central Railway.

The Memorial Gardens were opened in 1949 to commemorate the fallen heroes of the first and second world wars. These formally designed gardens comprise a WWI war memorial and WWII plaque, the former originally situated in St. Mary’s churchyard. In more recent years, the gardens have been further developed with the addition of The Peace Garden, a sensory garden, WWI replica models of two SE5a bi-planes, HMS Dreadnought, and a lone soldier, and the Queen’s 90th birthday rose garden. The pond fountain was replaced in 2022.

The name “Amersham” is derived from the Old English for ‘Ealhmund’s village records date back to Anglo Saxon times when it was known as Agmodesham, and by the time that the Domesday Book was written in 1086, it had become known as Elmodesham Queen Edith was the wife of Edward the Confessor and sister of King Harold, and after her death in 1075, the land passed to William the Conqueror, who granted it to Geoffrey de Mandeville, In 1200, his descendant Geoffrey de Mandeville (who became the Earl of Essex in 1213) obtained a charter for Amersham allowing him to hold a Friday market and a fair on 7 and 8 September. In 1613, another charter was granted to Edward, Earl of Bedford, changing the market day to Tuesday, and establishing a statute fair on 19 September The town was then part of the county constituency of Buckinghamshire. From 1885 it was in the Aylesbury constituency, in 1950 it formed part of the South Buckinghamshire seat and in 1974 the current Cresham and Amersham constituency was created
