The St Mary’s Church of Hemel Hempstead !!!

This time took my road warrior skills to go again to jolly England with the Le Shuttle train service (see post), and my Ford ; a trip of 2043 km or aprox 1269 miles, towing along my good boys and wonderful Rex! It was a very nice trip going into the countryside and seeing several towns of wonderul architecture and history, This one was our home base with a rental apartment/flat and was very spacious and an even better location, we enjoyed it fully, Therefore, let me tell you about the St Mary’s Church of Hemel Hempstead !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The St Mary’s Church in Old Town is the parish church of the town and its oldest place of worship. Construction of the present church commenced in 1140 and the church was dedicated in 1150, although construction continued for another 30 years. It is not known why such a grand church was constructed in what at the time was a small hamlet. The church is cruciform in shape, with a chancel, a nave, south and north transepts, and a tower. A spire, one of the tallest in Europe, was added in the 14C with a total height of 200 feet (about 61 meters). It is topped by a gilded weather vane. A 19C vestry was added on the church. There is a Walker organ which was refurbished in 2008. A ring of five bells was recorded in the reign of Edward VI. None of these remain and the present ring is of 8 bells dating from 1590 to 1767.
