This is Champrepus !!

There you go had pictures mix in another post and it should be in one , me think, This is a real off the beaten path village we passed by on our road warrior trails, stopping several towns/villages until passing by Champrepus, A nice quant village indeed, a find in my belle France, Therefore, let me tell you my take on this is Champrepus !! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The village of Champrepus is located in the Manche department no 50 in the Normandie region of my belle France. The village is located 7.5 km from Villedieu-les-Poêles, 5.5 km from exit/sortie no 37 of the A84 autoroute at Fleury, 28 km from Avranches, and 10 km from Le Loreur, It is cross by the D924 road , which passes through the village and leads to Fleury ,Villedieu-les-Poêles, Beauchamps and Granville. It intersects the D 238, which provides access to Le Mesnil-Garnier and to the D 165 roads, linking La Haye-Pesnel and Le Tanu to Fleury. We came on our way back from Le Loreur on the D35 road or Route de la Liberation bearing left onto the D924 road dir Beauchamps past this village and continue past the Zoo of Champrepus to the church,

The Church Saint Jean Baptiste built from the 13C;18C and 20C features a gabled bell tower. It houses a high altar (18C) adorned with a lamb, a pulpit (18C), a holy water font (14C), and a statue of Saint Roch and his dog (19C). We were on our road warrior trail and passed by briefly enough to have the spot in my blog for future travels, This village has less than 400 inhabitants, The facade features a round-arched portal constructed of granite. It is surmounted by a large segmental arched window, now walled up. The arch of the window is constructed of small stones set on edge. The modern oculus above it features four projecting voussoirs across the entire structure. A corner turret provides access to the tower’s upper level. The bell tower, topped with a gabled roof, rises to the north of the transept in three successively recessed stories. Standing 25 meters tall,

A bit of history of the Church of Saint John the Baptist tell us that it is of Romanesque origin, as evidenced by the few remaining vestiges. The arch of the former 11-12C portal, now blocked, is visible at the base of the south wall of the nave. The church was placed under the patronage of the abbot and monks of the Abbey of Sainte-Croix of Saint-Lô from the 12C onwards. It belonged to the Bishop of Coutances from 1278, who presented canons from the cathedral. The King of France intervened from 1665 onwards, but the appointment of Louis Frémont as parish priest at the end of the 17C confirmed the role of the monks of Saint-Lô. The church began to take on its cruciform shape from the 17C onwards, when it was decided to build a bell tower to the north and a chapel opposite it to the south of the transept, starting in the last third of the 18C.

Other things to see here are the Beauchamps Mill , a former watermill dating from the 18C, located on the Airou river. The 8-hectare Champrepus Zoological Park, founded in 1957 by private owner Lucien Lebreton, is situated on the Villedieu-les-Poêles – Granville road. The Champrepus Zoo is home to approximately 300 animals of about sixty species, organized into seven themed areas: Malagasy, African, Tropical, “Nono the Penguin,” a petting zoo, and an Asian area, It seems to be the main thing to see here! A bit of history as told by locals tell us that saw Champrépus as the site of the battle which took place in 56 BC between Sabinus, Caesar’s lieutenant, and Viridorix, chief of the Unelli (Gauls of Contentin) Under the monarchy, the parish was under the jurisdiction of the Chaslon sergeantry, the Coutances electoral district, and the Caen generality. The parish was under the jurisdiction of the Coutances bailiwick and the Cotentin bailiwick.
