The Church Saint Vincent of Le Lude !!!

I was on my by now monthly road warrior trails of my belle France, I was out with my boys and my good dog Rex riding into the wonderful regions near me. This even if passed by before, is my first time in the town of Le Lude, full of architecture and history monuments. The town of Le Lude is located in the Sarthe department 72 in the Pays de la Loire region of my belle France , Therefore, here is my take on the Church Saint Vincent of Le Lude !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church Saint-Vincent dates from the 11-12C, and 16C and 18C, The origins of the parish church are unclear. In the 9C, a first church in Le Lude , belonging to the Abbey of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes in Poitou, was apparently destroyed during the Norman invasions. Around the year 1000, the priest Hamelin built a chapel near this church, dedicated to Saint-Aubin, which he then gave to the Abbey of Saint-Aubin in Angers. The monks of the Angevin abbey then founded a priory and purchased part of the old cemetery to build their house. At the beginning of the 12C, the inhabitants of Le Lude built a small church between the new cemetery and the town gate, which they dedicated to Notre-Dame-des-Vertus. At an undetermined date, the Saint-Jouin priory moved to the apse of the Notre-Dame-des-Vertus church, and the old church, whose name is often confused with that of the priory became the Saint-Vincent parish Church, which still retained a small cemetery in front of its gate in 1703. The history of this church has been very eventful since the 19C: in 1854, the bell tower collapsed, and in 1966, the nave vault and part of its southern wall collapsed. Around 1900 an imitation of the church of Chenu, the bell tower was rebuilt above the western facade.

The plan of the Church Saint Vincent shows significant distortions due to very different construction campaigns: the nave is not aligned with the choir. The choir is believed to have been on the site of the original 11C church, to which a nave was added in the 12-13C. The entire choir, with its three bays and side aisles, was enlarged in the 16C. The bell tower rested on four large pillars placed between the choir and the nave.
