This museum is dedicated to the memory of the combatants who took part in the fighting. On the pediment, a Latin phrase recalls that in 1944, the British came to liberate their victors of 1066 (Battle of Hastings).

The Musée Mémorial de la Bataille de Normandie or the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum devotes 2,300 m² to exhibiting the military operations conducted for the Battle of Normandy during the summer of 1944. Inaugurated in 1981, the museum is located in the heart of one of the strategic locations of the Battle of Normandy: the city of Bayeux, the first city to be liberated in continental France on June 7, 1944. During the operations of the Battle of Normandy, military engineering units played a crucial role in the victory. A tribute to them is paid within the museum. An emblematic engineering vehicle, a Caterpillar D7 bulldozer, is presented in one of the rooms of the Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum. This type of vehicle played a vital role in clearing the ruins of bombed cities and was used by the British engineers for the construction of the Bayeux Bypass.

Gateway to the D-Day landing beaches, the museum immerses us in history through a chronological journey of the events that occurred during the summer of 1944, enriched with thematic areas: the Resistance and De Gaulle, war correspondents, Allied air force, civilian life, and more. Numerous period materials and objects are on display. Archival film (25 min): Normandy 44: Decisive Victory in the West. General Patton launched Operation Cobra on July 25, 1944, and broke through enemy lines. The operation was a success: it enabled the breakthrough at Avranches and the penetration into Brittany. On August 6, 1944, the nazis launched a counterattack in the Mortain region toward Avranches to cut off the American advance. But a carpet of Allied bombing led to this enemy operation failing. Soon surrounded in the Falaise Pocket, the nazis armies retreated towards Paris. The Battle of Normandy ended at the end of August 1944. From this period on, the Allies advanced rapidly towards the east, Brittany, the Pays de la Loire, etc.

On January 5, 1978, Jimmy Carter, President of the United States, was received in Bayeux by French President Valéry Giscard d’Estaing. On this occasion, a temporary exhibition was presented, which served as the basis for the design of the museum, which was inaugurated on July 14, 1981, in a space of 1,000 m2. In 1986, the exhibition space was doubled to 2,000 m2. In 1994, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Normandy landings, the museum underwent a further expansion of 300 m2. The current museum scenography was installed in 2006. The museum presents a large collection of military uniforms and vehicles.
