We have driven in the area and stop by finally, and a great surprise indeed, This is the nice City of Meung-sur-Loire located in the Loiret department no. 45 in the Centre-Val de Loire region of my belle France, There is so much to see , and did see more for you and me, So close by it many times and finally in ,a great surprise, nice town indeed! Therefore, here is my take on the Porte d’Amont of Meung sur Loire !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The Porte d’Amont of Meung-sur-Loire, was built during the 13C and devastated during the Wars of Religion, it was rebuilt in 1629. It was the main gate, the gate of honor, as it served as a meeting place for the aldermen. Its defensive character has been altered over time. Large openings were made in the 17C. Only a few traces of the drawbridge remain; the location of the portcullis remains visible. The numerous arrow slits, or loopholes, are hidden. From the 13C, in peacetime, the Porte d’Amont served as the City/town hall on the first floor. The bell, intended to alert in case of attack, is still located in the bell tower. While some remains of the city walls still remain, the Porte d’Amont is the most prominent of these. Overlooking the city, it provides a true link between the historic center bordered by the Loire river and the more recent districts to the north.

The Porte d’Amont of Meung-sur-Loire is surrounded by ramparts opened by four gates from the 13C. Stone walls approximately 2 meters thick were built to protect the town. From above, the lookout warned the population by ringing the belfry in case of danger. After lowering the portcullises and raising the drawpoint, the watchmen took up their post to defend the town. The Amont Gate is the only remaining evidence of these ramparts. It was restored in 1870, the year it was bequeathed to the town. The year the clock was installed is imprecise; however, it is certain that it was installed after 1797, according to surviving writings. It was restored in 1979. This clock has a special feature: it displays 61 minutes! Error or joke by the watchmaker of the time, the mystery remains!
