The Notre Dame Abbey of Beaugency !!!

We have driven in the area and stop by finally, and a great surprise indeed, This is the nice City of Beaugency in the Loiret dept 45 of the Centre Val de Loire region of my belle France, There is so much to see , and did see more for you and me, So close by it many times and finally in ,a great surprise, nice town indeed! Therefore, here is my take on  the Notre Dame Abbey of Beaugency !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The Notre-Dame Abbey of Beaugency was built in the 12C, It has witnessed major episodes in the history of France, particularly in relation to the Hundred Years’ War. Today divided between several establishments, it is open to visitors. The various buildings of the abbey are today divided into several establishments: the Notre-Dame Abbey Church serves as the parish church; the former cloister space and one of the surrounding towers, known as the Devil’s Tower, belong to the Abbey’s high school; The former dormitory has been converted into a hotel.

The
Notre Dame Abbey Church has retained many features of Romanesque architecture, both on the exterior: the historiated chevet and the soberly decorated entrance portal, and on the interior: the non-projecting transept typical of the region, the soberly sculpted capitals, the interplay of the choir arches, etc. Dating from 1665, the Gothic vault, paneled in wood, gives visitors the illusion of stone. During your visit, don’t miss the Assumption, painted in 1661 by Michel Corneille, a student of Simon Vouet, co-founder of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Also worth seeing are the organ and modern stained-glass windows.

The Tribune Organ built in 1861-62 was rebuilt in 1977 .Gorgeous !!!

A bit of history tell us the Notre Dame Abbey was part of the Beaugency Citadel. The citadel, or more precisely castrum, is a fortified city. The Beaugency castrum is attested for the first time on a coin dating from the 10C. Archaeology and texts reveal that in the 11C, the Beaugency castrum was already firmly established. In the 12C, the Beaugency castrum included: The first enclosure; A keep, wrongly named César tower; A lords’ dwelling, transformed in the 15C to become the Château Dunois (see post) ; A collegiate church which became an abbey church in the 12C, also called the Notre Dame Church of Beaugency; and those who occupied it were several canons regular following the rule of Saint Augustine. Between 1104 and 1108, Raoul de Beaugency, under the impetus of the Gregorian Reform, allowed the canons who served the primitive church to free themselves from the guardianship of the lords: their abbey was built. Around 1140, the church was transformed and became the Romanesque abbey church that can be seen today. The abbey has been a privileged witness to major events in the history of France. It was in 1152 that the annulment of the marriage of Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine took place in the abbey church, a prelude to the Hundred Years’ War. Three centuries later, in 1429, Joan of Arc liberated the citadel from the English. The abbey was also a victim of the Wars of Religion: in 1568, the entire framework of the abbey church burned down. During the French revolution, the church was put at the service of the parish, which has allowed it to survive to this day.
