Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Beaugency, part II !!! Hope you enjoy it as I
The town of Beaugency is located 29 km from Orléans, 8 km from Meung-sur-Loire, 24 km from Chambord, 147 km from Versailles, and 445 km from my current home, The town is crossed by seven departmental roads: a high-traffic road (the RD 2152), four moderate-traffic roads (the RD 19, 917, 918 and 925) and two low-traffic roads (the RD 719 and RD 925 north of the town). The RD 2152 is a high-traffic road. It is the old RN 152 which linked Briare to Angers via the right bank of the Loire when it was created in 1824, and which succeeded the Imperial Route 172. The A10 autoroute, known as “L’Aquitaine”, links Paris to Bordeaux aat its ring road via Orléans, Tours, Poitiers and Niort. It runs along the northern territorial boundary of the town, but has no exchange with its territory. The nearest access to this autoroute is the Meung-sur-Loire interchange, located 8 km away and constituting exit/sortie no. 15. The Le Mer interchange, constituting exit/sortie no. 16, is located 11 km away.
Statue Jeanne d’Arc done in 1894 at the Place Saint Fermin, The bronze statue is placed on a high stone pedestal. Joan of Arc is depicted riding into battle, brandishing her standard in her left hand and holding her sword in the other. We parked just across from it !

The Saint-Firmin bell tower is the last vestige of an 11C Romanesque church, remodeled during the Renaissance and demolished during the French revolution. It is located at Place Saint Firmin

Other interesting monument not seen but worth a look eventually is the Saint-Étienne Church an 11C church constructed on a Latin cross plan with a large transept. It now serves as a municipal cultural center since its restoration; The City/town hall is a Renaissance building from the 16C which includes some tapestries , the Sainte Anne Chapel, the former hospice from the 12C and 16C,and the former prison dating from the 14-15C, The Gate of the Clock Tower from the 11C and 18C, The House of the Templars, from the 12C, See post I for the history of the town
The town of Beaugency is mentioned in several notable literary works. Victor Hugo set Act V of the drama Marion Delorme (1831) there. Honoré de Balzac also set several scenes in Beaugency from his novel On Catherine de Medici (published from 1836 to 1844). Alexandre Dumas, in The Three Musketeers (1844), set the first meeting of D’Artagnan with Milady de Winter at the bridge at Meung-sur-Loire, about 15 km from Beaugency. However, at that time, there was no bridge at Meung-sur-Loire. Dumas was therefore probably inspired by the Beaugency bridge in his novel by setting it at Meung-sur-Loire. Finally, in the novel Moonraker (1955) by Ian Fleming, James Bond, at the end of the adventure, thinks he’s having a good time in a village on the banks of the Loire: “places like Beaugency, for instance” In cinema, the town of Beaugency is mentioned in the films La Baie des Anges (1963) by Jacques Demy and Le Jardinier d’Argenteuil (1966) in which Jean Gabin plays. All favorites of mine !
