This is the Isle Saint Georges !!

This was by chance and turn out to be a wonderful road warrior trail by beautiful wine country south of Bordeaux when we were vacationing on the beach of Lacanau-Océan which already plenty written on it. I waited until found me some pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, For reference the village of Isle Saint Georges is in the department no 33 of Gironde ,in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region of my belle France, Therefore, here is my small contribution to this is the Isle Saint George !! Hope you enjoy it as I

The village of Isle-Saint-Georges is located at the confluence of the Garonne and the Saucats rivers in the Graves vineyard. It is 9 km from Cadaujac, 20 km from Bordeaux, 80 km from Lacanau-Océan, 555 km from Versailles, and 467 km from my current home, As said we came from Lacanau-Océan on the road D6 which becomes the same road under the N215, get on the rocade of Bordeaux on the A630 to connect with the A62 dir Agen but get off at exit/sortie 1 to D113 road dir La Bréde but before make a left on the road D214 dir Saint Médard d’Eyrans keep going past the town same road until the village.

The Church Saint Georges was built in 1852 in place of a small 11C church, It is of neogothic style with remarkable size of 30 meters by 20 meters and an original bell tower of 36 meters, The bas-relief affixed to the facade of the church comes from the primitive church.

The high relief of the 14C, above the small front door. Two gilded wooden statues of the 17C representative of the Virgin and Saint Joseph. An ex-voto of the 18C, three-masted reproducing ” La Félicité ” of the Cornic-Duchesne corsair which was covered with glory during the War of Seven Years and lived 25 years in Rabey in the village, A painting from the 16-17C of Saint Catherine with the sword and the palm of martyrs. This painting was discovered on the door of the sacristy , The baptismal fonts in baldaquins have 4 golden columns in Corinthian style.

The high altar “at La Romaine”, in white marble, and more closely, the golden shrine with relics of Saint Georges … or from the Holy Land, the Porte du Tabernacle offers a symbolic representation of the Trinity. On the aisles, the altars of the Virgin and the Sacred Heart, at the entrance of the choir, Saint Peter and Saint Joseph and others more modest: Saint Roch, Saint Germaine de Pibrac, Jeanne d’Arc, Saint Thérèse, Saint Expedit… A painting by Father Duzan represents the old church, In the sacristy, a drawer furniture, rare, dating from 1890 still contains priestly clothes. The way of the cross is a set of polychrome paintings on metal plates. Mural paintings adorn the choir, apse and nave. The fresco on the tympanum of the choir represents Saint Georges terrasing the dragon to save the princess, daughter of the king of Silcha. In the nave, above the arches, the painted quadrilobed medallions represent the portraits of the twelve apostles.

Other things to see here are the Villa Verdelet, owned by a Bordeaux wine merchant built at the end of the 19C. In the fashion of the time, it has two laps, one octagonal with slots and jaw of fantasy, the other square covered with a pointed roof. Two high reliefs play Jeanne d’Arc then Saint-Georges terrasing the dragon. The different buildings are decorated with many sculptures with barrels and grape clusters. Also, the Château de Montigny-Rabey now a lodging house ,a cartusian of the 17C overlooking the Garonne river, having retained its authentic character, Château Montesquiou, 8 Rue du Port, an establishment domiciled in the town, produces a red wine from the Graves , Good wine indeed, Of very old origin 15C, the Artaud vineyards were born at a time when the gabarres (boats) loaded the barrels in Isle-Saint-Georges, in the heart of the Graves, to bring them to the port de la Lune. Then these sailors became coopers. Today, Lucas Artaud, in controls since 2020, leads a 28 ha vineyard which managed two labels: Château Calens and Château Montesquiou. A bit of history I like tell us that in the 11C, a priory of the Sainte-Croix abbey of Bordeaux was founded as well as the attractive parish with its church, In the 12-13C, the castle of Pey de Bordeaux and the wheat mill were built. Controlling the river, this castle became the siege of a jurisdiction in 1650, some nobles were in rebellion against the power of the Regency, this period was called, the Fronde. The Duke of Épernon, governor of Guyenne, arms the castle to block the Garonne, an essential route for the supply of Bordeaux. The Bordelais retake the fortified castle. Taken up by the royal forces, it will be destroyed. During the French revolution, the parish of Isle-Saint-Georges forms the village of Isle-Saint-Georges, the vines is the massive culture of the village, despite its various crises which lead to an important rural exodus.
