The town of Melun is located in the department no, 77 of Seine-et-Marne in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. It is 54 km from Meaux , 49 km from Paris, 56 km from Versailles, and 472 km from my current home, I happened to be by here after a long pause and the memories flash back nicely, There were mix in other posts and they should a post of their own , me think , Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Saint Aspais of Melun !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.
The Church Saint-Aspais is located on Rue Saint-Aspais (RD 415) This is the only church in France dedicated to Saint Aspais, evangelizer of the city at the end of Antiquity, whose life is unknown. The Flamboyant Gothic Church Saint-Aspais is the largest church in Melun, with a striking irregular trapezoidal plan. Its sculptures, 16C stained glass windows and bell tower make it an exceptional church.

The first mention of the Church Saint-Aspais dates back to 1080. It was completely rebuilt in the 16C to the plans of Jehan de Felin, renowned architect of the Tour Saint-Jacques in Paris. Built right in the center of Melun, is a church of an exceptional interior, A visit to the interior is a must if you want to admire the sculptures, real stone lacework, the altarpieces and the preciousness of the groined vaults. What’s more, the church still has some of its original stained glass windows, masterpieces of the 16C, particularly in the choir.

The Bishop of Sens would have sent Saint-Aspais, a confessor priest, to evangelize Melun in the 5C. The Church Saint-Aspais is cited in 1080 by Richer, Bishop of Sens. The current church is larger than the primitive one. The facade and the first spans were rebuilt in 1505 on the site of demolished houses the bedside done from 1517 to 1519, proceeding to the destruction of the original choir, of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin and to the displacement of the vaults of the Malhoste family. The reconstruction of the entire church was completed in 1555 with the members of the parish factory council criticize as too abundant decor, composed of the most recent elements of flamboyant architecture . The savings then requested are probably at the origin of the multiple collapses of the vaults from 1598 to 1703. During the bombings of August 1944, the arrow and the belfry were destroyed, the collapsed vaults, the nave, the drum of the large portal and the burned 18C organs, partly blown cover. The vaults of the nave were rebuilt and the fenestrages restored in 1956, while the remarkable stained glass windows of the 16C were reinstalled, fortunately dismantled before 1944. Beautiful testimony of late Gothic, the Church Saint-Aspais restored between 1997 and 1999, is also remarkable for the originality of its irregular trapezoid -shaped plan and its contemporary stained glass.
