The Church Notre Dame of Melun !!!

The town of Melun is located in the department no, 77 of Seine-et-Marne in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. It is 54 km from Meaux , 49 km from Paris, 56 km from Versailles, and 472 km from my current home, I happened to be by here after a long pause and the memories flash back nicely, There were mix in other posts and they should a post of their own , me think , Therefore, let me tell you about the Church Notre Dame of Melun !!!  Hope you enjoy this post as I.

The Collegiate Church of Notre Dame, at Place Notre-Dame. This is located rue de la Courtille was founded between 1016 and 1031 by the King of France Robert II the Pious on the site of a previous church, Notre-Dame had the status of collegiate church prior to the French revolution, when the church was secularised. It is now the property of the City of Melun, and has been restored to religious uses.

In 1031, the nave, the aisles, the transept and the base of the bell towers, still visible today, are already built. These elements correspond to the Romanesque style. The bell towers are finished around 1100 and restored in 1515 and 1524. These important towers flanking the choir belong to a set of important religious buildings of the 10C, marking the Capetian domains, From 1161, the choir is rebuilt in the Gothic style. In 1198, it was consecrated in 1198 and royal ceremonies were organized in the collegiate church as the marriage of the daughter of Saint Louis, Isabelle, with Thibaut II of Navarre.

The canons are dispersed during the French revolution. The church was closed in 1844, and restored thanks to the funds collected from 1851 to 1862 by a lottery. The roof and most of the stained glass windows are destroyed during the bombing of WWII. The missing stained glass windows were redone in 1955, with the central theme of the Virgin Mary and Saint Etienne, Saint Aspais and Saint Liesne, two local saints. A famous 15C painting, the Melun Diptych, was commissioned by Etienne Chevalier to hang in the church. It remained there until the 18C, The church has a two-manual Cavaillé-Coll organ. The instrument was acquired at the end of the 19C from the singer Pauline Viardot. It was made in 1851 by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll for the private use of the singer Pauline Viardot Sister of Malibran. The buffet is of neo-Renaissance style with a particularly neat decor.
