I again found some older pictures in one cd rom of my vault, Of course, they need to be in my blog for you and me ,and the memories of past travels, I like to tell you about these litle towns of Normandy, off the beaten path but always in my road warrior trails Therefore, here is my take on this is Saint Vaast la Hougue !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.
The town of Saint Vaast la Hougue is located in the department of the Manche no, 50 in the Normandie region of my belle France, It has the particularity of presenting on its territory a major site of the work of Vauban: the observatories of Tatihou and La Hougue, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is one of the cities and villages classified as “2 flowers” in the cities label and flowery villages. The town is elected favorite village of the French 2019, about a kilometer from the coast, Tatihou Island is part of the town. It is accessible on foot at low tide and an amphibious boat provides a regular connection with the port houses a marina.
It is the third fishing port in the Channel, Saint-Vaast is also a renowned oyster center. Hiking enthusiasts will find tens of incomparable kilometers between the paths that wind in the hedgerow and the essential customs path, which extends from Saint-Vaast to Anse de Brick. An appointment much appreciated by boaters, Saint-Vaast welcomes many regattas. the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue was set up was built from 1828 to 1845 then the quays of 1846 to 1852, The port empties at low tide. a lock at the entrance to the port was inaugurated in 1982 to make it a afloat pool, shared between a fishing port and a marina. Today, professional fishing is still a major axis of the local economy, but it is competed with tourism which has extended during the 19C. The port is mainly occupied by French and foreign pleasure boats.

Other things to see here, with more time are : The Chapelle des Marins,or sailors, is the choir 12C and the apse of the old church of Saint-Vaast, demolished in 1864. Its Romanesque circular apse dates from the 11C, The Saint-Vaast Church of the 19C and its choir Néogothique, without bell tower for lack of sufficient resources, was opened to worship in 1861 , The Tatihou Island and its maritime museum, its maritime garden of acclimatization and discovery and its ornithological reserve. The island, located 100 meters from Tatihou Island, and which is fully occupied by the fortified work , The fortifications of La Hougue and Tatihou dates from 1694. The towers of Tatihou and La Hougue, and the lighthouse of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is placed at the end of the pier, at the top of a metallic octagonal turret in cast iron and 11 meters high. It was put into service on July 25, 1865.
A bit of history I like tell us that the medieval parish, stronghold of the Abbey of Fécamp, is under the patronage of Saint Vaast, which never came to Normandy, because it was in Flanders that he exercised his priesthood, as bishop of Arras , During the Hundred Years War, Édward III of England, in 1346, undertook a campaign aimed at taking Paris. On July 11, the King of England brought together a thousand ships in the rands of Portsmouth, Southampton and the island of Wight and sailed. The next day, on Wednesday 12, the bay not being fortified, around noon, Édward III arrives with his son, the black prince, in Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue with 20,000 men carried by more than a thousand ships. In June 1356, it was also in La Hougue that the Duke of Lancaster arrived before ravaging Normandy. In 1357, an English garrison commissioned by Robert de Ewes moved to La Hougue. In 1360, the Brétigny Treaty returned all the strong places of Cotentin to France, with the exception of that of Saint-Vaast and Saint-Sauveur which remain English. The fort was ultimately evacuated in 1361, In May 1405, the Duke of Lancaster, future king of England under the name of Henri V, arrives at the Church Saint-Pierre-and are looted during the fifth religion of religion (1574-1576), Montgommery, refugee in England after the massacre of Saint-Barthélemy, arrives in Saint-Vaast with an army strong of 5,000 men in order to take over the Cotentin on Thursday, May 29, 1692, the Battle of La Hougue facing Barfleur, between Cap de la Hougue and La Pointe de Barfleur, the French fleet led by the Admiral de Tourville and the Anglo-Dutch fleet. The two fortified towers will be built from June 1694 the fortification work continued until the 19C, On June 21, 1944, the port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is the first port of the Channel liberated by the Allies.
