Curiosities of Rigny-Ussé !!!

I was again on my road warrior trips to the wonderful Loire valley . This is an area you can easily spent a lifetime and do not see it all, awesome. I have seen plenty around here, but decided to come back to see more, The town of Rigny-Ussé is in the Indre et Loire dept 37 of the Centre Val de Loire region of my belle France, This post is to include older pictures not yet in my blog, and they should be, for you and me, Do see my main post on these monuments, Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Rigny-Ussé !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I. The Château d’Ussé is a private domain open to visitors, and belongs to the 7th Duke of Blacas, This is the castle overlooking the Indre and the Loire rivers, so wonderful that it inspired Charles Perrault to imagine the castle of Sleeping Beauty. In 1885, the Blacas family acquired the castle and had it since then. They, also maintains the Notre Dame Church of Rigny-Ussé, Here in an isolated building you can see the Chapelle Sainte Anne d’Ussé as the Notre Dame collegiate Church of Ussé thus baptized in homage to Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, and grandma of Christ, (patron saint of my Bretagne ! ) is in all respects to the architectural canons of the Renaissance. They also revealed, around the church, the existence of large stone buildings, contemporary with the first church. At that time, Rigny was an estate of the monastery of Saint-Martin de Tours. A wonderful church indeed, In 1983, the church and 22 ares of land around were sold for a symbolic franc at the “association of the Teillay forest park”, which has become the association Notre-Dame de Rigny, The church abandoned since 1863, the church revised thanks to a series of works initiated by the above association, owner of the premises for forty years. The restoration of the interior of the nave ended in June 2023. Usse pont D16 on Indre river front of castle entr feb22 A bit of history I like tell us that the village of Ussé merged in 1860 with Rigny to form the town of Rigny-Ussé. The village of Ussé houses the Château de Rigny-Ussé, aka« château de la belle au bois dormant » or the Sleeping Beauty Castle, It was Charles Perrault having resided in the 17C and being inspired by Ussé during the writing of Sleeping Beauty. The town of Rigny-Ussé  is halfway between Tours and Saumur while descending the course of the Loire, the town is in the center of a quadrilateral formed by Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon, Bourgueil and Langeais. Close to 15 km from these cities, it offers, from them, easy and pleasant access. The castle is right on D 7 road , the town takes place like a long ribbon, from east to west. Picturesque old houses made of tuffeau and covered with slates follow each other, for the majority, along the main street which leaves the Port Gautier to reach the famous castle, this track, bordered by Indre to the north, is back to a hill nicely wooded south; it is completed by the Ile Saint-Martin formed by the arms of Indre from which we have the most beautiful view of the castle and the hill. The Vallon de Rigny, a green setting where the old Notre-Dame-de-Rigny church and its miraculous fountain huddled, also houses many hamlets with typical residences. We know that in the 5C religious came to settle at a place called Saint-Paul, east of Rigny (a little before Port Gautier) to preach the religion of Christ there. They build a church and a monastery there that all traces has disappeared today. In the 9C, the Benedictines of Cormery sent a few monks to continue the work of their predecessors and founded a priory there. They receive from the Lord of Ussé of the lands and the woods which then form the Bordery of Saint-Paul. In 1040 ; the town of Ussé began to be born. The religious then think of getting closer to this new center and build the small Sainte-Foy chapel, in the jardin du Seigneur or Lord’s garden, not far from that which exists today. They also build the Sainte-Foy priory, probably in front of the castle. While establishing themselves in Ussé, they continue to provide for the spiritual needs of Rigny. In the 15C ,the region of Saint-Benoît-la-Forêt (see post) ,and Rigny was a regular place of stay of King Louis XI which comes to Mass to Notre Dame de Rigny Church ,and signs ordinances and letters missive. Louis XI did not fear to cross the large forest of Chinon where he liked hunting to come and attend the mass in Notre-Dame-de-Rigny for which he had a particular devotion. We know through the registers that there were many offerings in gold , The habitat, in the 18C, was in the form of a mosaic of isolated farms and hamlets. Only Ussé can show an alignment of 31 houses thanks to an important legacy, With the help of the town and the State, after three years of work, ended the construction of the new church in 1859, in the center of Ussé, realizing a project of 1701! The official merger of the two village entities was decided in 1860: it was now called Rigny-Ussé . During the War of 1870, in October, the town was visited by a company of snipers and then occupied by the Prussians from February 28 to 5 March 1871.
