We have driven all over this wonderful area of my belle France, and would like to have an imprint in my blog on the wonderful family times we had there, There is so much to see , doing my best, and glad found me these older paper pictures which now transposing in my blog for you and me, The pictures are old ,so the quality may not be as good ,but the memories are forever, Therefore, here is my take on this is Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I. The village of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is located in the Haute-Garonne dept no 31 in the Occitanie region of my belle France. On the historical and cultural level, the municipality is in the country of Comminges, corresponding to the former county of Comminges, district of the province of Gascogne located on the current departments of Gers, Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and de l’Ariège The village is a member of the association the most beautiful villages in France. It is 115 km from Toulouse, 19 km from Saint-Gaudens, 34 km from Bagnères-de-Luchon, 106 km from Pau, 186 km from Jaca (Spain), 782 km from Versailles , and 789 km from my current town. The thing to see here at least in our road warrior time is the Notre-Dame de Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Cathedral, aka Sainte-Marie Cathedral, The cathedral is located on the acropolis of a Celtic oppidum which gave birth to the Roman city of Lugdunum Convenarum whose ruins extend into the plain. The invasion of the vandals in 409 devastated it. The construction of the cathedral dates back to around the year 1100. There remains from the cathedral built by Bertrand de l’Isle the base of the walls of the first four spans and the facade of The nave. The cloister is redone in the 12-13C in a richer form. There remains a Romanesque gallery to the west. In the first half of the 13C, canons added two spans to the cloister, the southern and east galleries which encompassed the chapter room. The northern cloister gallery was built in the 14C. This is the only one that is vaulted. Bertrand of Goth is bishop of Comminges between 1294 and 1299, before becoming Archbishop of Bordeaux, between 1299 and 1305, and to be elected Pope under the name of Clément V in 1305. The first stone was laid in 1307,and the mausoleum received the body of the saint in 1476. Its construction began in the 12C and it was repeatedly revamped. Three of its galleries are Romanesque, covered with a roof in Clear-Voie. They have arched arches which are based on a double row of columns surmounted by decorated capitals, the most worked of which is the pillar of the evangelists. The Galerie du Midi opens onto the neighboring hill.  The northern Gothic gallery, austere style, was redone in the 15-16C. It contains the graves of seven canons, hence its name of gallery of tombs. The museum was created in 1927 after the discovery in 1926 of the statues of the imperial trophy discovered fragmented in 133 pieces at the foot of the western facade of the temple of the forum dedicated to Augustus, around 13-10 BC. They are in the chapel of the olivetans which is next to the cathedral. These were inscrits to the Unesco World Heritage on Humanity listed as the “Way of Compostela in France”, The following monuments: the old Notre-Dame cathedral; The Saint-Just de Valcabrère basilica; the paleochretian basilica; and the Saint-Julien chapel. A bit of history tell us that before the conquest of the region by the Romans, the region is the siege of the Convènes (Iberoaquitan people, different from the Gauls). Around 72 BC, the site becomes Romain, under the name of Lugdunum Convenarum for three centuries, the village has an urban center and numerous monuments: forum, temple, thermal baths, theater, trophy, market, vast villas numerous mosaics… In 410, it was acquired by the Visigoths who made Toulouse their capital, Around 430, the Paleochretian basilica was built. In 1083, Bertrand de l’Isle, grandson of Count Guillaume III Taillefer of Toulouse, is elected Bishop of Comminges He undertakes the construction of the cathedral and the cloister. From his death, on October 16, 1123, he was considered a saint in the Pyrenean region. It is canonized in 1218, Lugdunum Convenarum, then took the name of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges,from 1222. In 1295, Pope Boniface VIII appointed Bertrand de Got, bishop of Comminges. He became, in 1305, the first pope in Avignon, under the name of Clément V. In 1304, he launched the construction of a new Gothic church and in 1309, he himself transported the relics of Saint Bertrand. He promotes the cult of the saint, making his tomb the center of a large pilgrimage. Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges becomes a stage of the Pyrenean Piedmont Way for the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. The French revolutionaries spared the cathedral, but in 1790, the bishopric was dismantled and shared in three dioceses: Toulouse and Bayonne in France and La Seu d’Urgellin Spain, in the Val d’Aran, formerly belonging to the diocese of Saint-Bertrand de Comminges. The relics were hidden by the local people. In 1793 the Convention changed the name of Saint-Bertrand in “Hauteville”. The village which only counts around 250 inhabitants, lives mainly on tourism, especially in the upper city around the cathedral, the lower city living especially with agriculture. In 1998.
