We have driven all over this wonderful area of my belle France, and would like to have an imprint in my blog on the wonderful family times we had there, There is so much to see , doing my best, and glad found me these older paper pictures which now transposing in my blog for you and me, The pictures are old ,so the quality may not be as good ,but the memories are forever, Therefore, here is my take on this is Montsaunés !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I. The village of Montsaunès is located in the Haute-Garonne department, 31 in the Occitanie region of my belle France. Historically and culturally, Montsaunès is part of the country of Comminges, corresponding to the former county of Comminges, district of the province of Gascony located in the current departments of Gers, Haute- Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées and Ariège, It is 68 km from Toulouse, 20 km from Saint Gaudens, 127 km from Pau, 68 km from Bagnères-de-Luchon,224 km from Jaca (Spain) ,744 km from Versailles, and 801 km from my current house, We got here by A10 dir Bordeaux, then A62,past Toulouse on A64 ,D117 to village, The one thing to see here is the Saint-Christophe Church, the only Templar church in France whose architecture has remained intact. The church is a large brick building which dates back to the end of the 12C. It has retained its remarkable decorations which make it famous. Indeed, two portals with finely chiseled figurations in white limestone, as well as the painted interior set, allow us to grasp the religious and symbolic dimensions of the Templars. The portal capitals date back to the end of the 12C and are among the most beautiful in Comminges. Staged in stylized architectural settings, they refer to various episodes of the New Testament and in particular to the childhood of Jesus, or to the life of certain apostles or holy martyrs (crucifixion of St Peter, stoning of St Stephen, etc.). The arch of the western portal is decorated with carved masks. After the abolition of the order of the temple, Montsaunès became one of the main commandery of the Order of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem, The local Cagire Garonne Sarlat tourist office on the church St Christophe : https://opyrenees.fr/visite-leglise-de-montsaunes-un-edifice-templier-salies-martory-comminges-pyrenees/ The Templars site on the Montsaunés commandery: https://templiers.org/montsaunes.html There you go folks, a dandy area to explore and enjoy with the family, Memorable moments in the Haute Garonne dept 31, driving all over in my road warrior trails brings out sublime awesome spots with nice memorable family visits of yesteryear always remember and always looking forward to be back, eventually.
