The Abbaye Saint-Pierre of Moissac, part I !!!

Several years back while visiting my belle France, took a ride into this area. Not aware had some older paper picture in my vault and glad to found them! Not back since but left a nice impression ,and hope to be back, eventually. Not the best quality pictures but is all I have for the memories of always. I like to tell you a bit about this town taking advantage of these much older pictures. Therefore, here is my take on the Abbaye Saint-Pierre of Moissac, part I !!!  Hope you enjoy the post as I. The town of Moissac is located in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne no 82 in the Occitanie region of my belle France. The Tarn river crosses the town and throws itself into the Garonne river in Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave, after having crossed 98 towns, The town is served by the A62 highway at  7 km from Castelsarrasin, and by the D113 Bordeaux-Marseille road, It is 44 km from Agen, 30 km from Montauban, 71 km from Toulouse, 187 km from Bordeaux, 628 km from Versailles, and 672 km from my current house. The Abbaye Saint-Pierre , founded in the 8C, was attached in 1047 to the powerful Abbey of Cluny and became, in the 12C, the most eminent monastic center in the southwest of France. The abbey and the cloister offer a remarkable example of association of Romanesque and Gothic styles, but it is the tympanum of the portal which constitutes the masterpiece of Moissac. Executed in 1130,one of the masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture. it illustrates the vision of Saint John in the book of the Apocalypse of the Parousia of Christ. The tympanum measures 6.5 m by 4.5 m. The two spans of the choir, the apse to five sides and the chapels are from the 15C. We see there a crucifixion of the 17C. The cloister novel capitals were completed in 1100, but the whole was taken up in the 13C with other columns and other arcades in warheads. Salles des Moines, Palais des Abbés and Tour done from the 13C to the 15C. The nave has preserved part of its furniture, including a virgin of pity of 1476, a charming leak in Egypt of the end of the 15C, as well as an admirable Romanesque Christ of the 12C, and finally a fee of 1485. The choir is surrounded by a carved stone fence, from the 16C, behind which a Carolingian apse was done , 17C stalls. In a niche placed under the organ, a Merovingian sarcophagus in white marble of the Pyrenees. From the 11c abbey remains only the massif bell tower-porche, a sort of dungeon with the round way, built for a defensive purpose but whose last floor only dates from the end of the Gothic era. Cloister ,end of the 11C, one of the best preserved in the Christian West. Moissac abbaye ch Saint Pierre front c2007 Moissac abbaye ch Saint Pierre mise au tombeau 15C c2007 Other things to see here, me think are : The Saint-Martin Church, (see post) some parts of which date from the 3C,  the old Saint-Michel Church located 49 rue Malaveille, mentioned in 1073, but origin is much older , The Saint-Jacques Church ; only the name remains. The current church is from the 19C, was fitted out as a craft museum. Pont-Canal du Cacor, 356 m long, east of Moissac, it allows the lateral channel to the Garonne to cross the Tarn, The musée Moissagais is in the old Logis des Abbés, imposing construction flanked by a crenellated tower of 13C. Les Halles or market at place des Récollets , built in 1891 , The Pont Napoleon bridge: decided by Napoleon I and ended by Napoleon III, we have a view of the quays and the Pont Saint-Jacques bridge is on the via Podiensis of the pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela. Leaving Moissac through the Porte Saint-Jacques, some Jacquets crossed the Garonne by boat (bac) at the tip, towards the Saint-Nicolas-de-Grave priory if others preferred to cross the Garonne in Malause, all found themselves in Auvillar. The reception of the pilgrims they could count on the Abbey, located near the Saint-Martin Church, or on the other hospitals in the city, one of which was placed under the name of Saint-Jacques. Moissac is one of the rare cities of via Podiensis where there is a mention of a brotherhood of Saint-James. Since 2000, the former Carmel, internship and stay center, has welcomed more than 12,000 people per year and in particular pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Fully restored, this historic building is located on a hillside. A bit of history I like tell us that in December 1464, by his patent letters, King Louis XI confirmed the privileges granted by his predecessors in 1622 to Moissac, During the war of religions, the town was taken by Louis XIII, The administrative reform of the French revolution places the town in the Lot department. On November 21, 1808, a decree of Napoleon I attached it to the new department of Tarn-et-Garonne. The town is known as “City of Chasselas”, named after table grapes from the village of Chasselas (Saône-et-Loire dept no 71); the production in AOC “Chasselas de Moissac” is practiced by farmers in the canton. During WWII, Moissac was a refuge for the important community of Israelite Scouts in France (EIF). The latter, accommodated at the Moulin de Moissac, or for the youngest at the Maison des enfants de Moissac, remain there during the war thanks, among other things, to the benevolence of the municipal authorities and the population Jewish children are dispersed in families reception until the Liberation (August 19, 1944). In the spring of 1944, part of the 4th SS “Das Reich” regiment was confined to it, before being called in Normandy and committed numerous abuses on its way, notably the massacre of Oradour-sur-Glane.
