The museum was founded in 1893, following the donation made to the city by Antoine Labit of the collections of his son, great traveler, ethnologist and collector Georges Labit , who gathered objects of art in the Far East and undertook to make it a museum for his contemporaries and for future generations. The collections evoke ancient cultures , until the 19C by the arts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, the former Vietnam (Champâ and Annam), the former Thailand (Siam), the Laos, Java, Nepal, Tibetan art and Chinese art, abd Japanese art. These objects are chosen, initially by Georges Labit, for their aesthetic qualities and in order to exempt an exemplary way the ancient cultures of these countries of Asia and Far East. For this reason, they are grouped with objects with the same qualities but from ancient Egypt, including a rare set of Coptic objects. The Georges Labit collection has been enriched by many donations. Purchases made by the city of Toulouse and deposits from the Guimet museum (Paris) complete these coherent and high quality collections. This museum is one of the oldest Asian art museums in France. The Georges-Labit museum is closed for work, need to check with the museum before coming.
It is a neo-Moorish-style villa developed in 1893 in the style of fashionable exotic villas since the 1860s in the vague of Orientalism which then fascinated the Western elite. This bourgeois house, with its kitchens, dining room, billiards and bedrooms, was also built to house the collections of a rich traveler, adventurer and ethnologist. We find there the patterns of use in this eclectic style , the arcs overrighty of the windows punctuated by the play of bricks alternating with the white plaster, the earthenware tiles with drawings inspired by Islamic art, and to the crescent of metal on the dome covered with turquoise blue enameled tiles. This beautiful colorful building is located in the middle of a small pleasure garden (open to the public) composed of Asian and Mediterranean plants (azaleas, bamboo, tree -lined or palm ferns identified by small signs), close to the canal de Midi (see post),
