This is Carpentras !!!

Several years back while visiting my belle France, took a ride into this area. Not aware had some older paper picture in my vault and glad to found them! Not back since but left a nice impression ,and hope to be back, eventually. I like to tell you a bit about this town taking advantage of these much older pictures. Therefore, here is my take on this is Carpentras !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I. The town of Carpentras is located in the dept of Vaucluse, no, 84 in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of my belle France. The city is on a hill. It is 27 km from Avignon, 25 km from Orange,102 km from Marseille, 81 km from Aix-en-Provence, 688 km (about 427 mi )from Versailles, and 1042 km from my current house, On the D942 you can reach it from Avignon via the A7 highway/Autoroute. Free parking in city center are at parkings des Platanes (we parked here), des Couquières , and de la Coulée Verte, The Cathédrale Saint-Siffrein, at place du Général de Gaulle, was built in the 15C in honor of the patron saint of the city; in Provençal Gothic style , It conceals, works of art of high value. In particular, among the oldest, Gothic stained glass windows (choir and chapel), and a 15C altarpiece representing the coronation of the Virgin between Saint Siffrein and Saint Michel. For this triptych, which has exceptionally kept its superciel, as well as for the stained glass window representing Saint Siffrein surrounded by Saint Michael and Saint Catherine of Siena. The tribune organ is from 1643. Carpentras former cathédrale Saint Siffrein front c2007 The first cathedral, a single nave with five spans, was built by Siffrein, monk of Lérins, in the 6C. Three other churches succeeded the old vestiges. The current cathedral was raised on the orders of the Pope of Avignon Benoît XIII at the beginning of the 15C, on the site of the old Romanesque cathedral. It succeeded three other churches built on the same location ,which you can still see vestiges of the Romanesque cathedral of the 12C on the north flank of the bedside. We enter the cathedral by two portals: the Porte Notre Dame dite ‘juive’, au midi , very fine example of flamboyant Gothic and the porte principale or main door, which opens in the classic facade added in the 17C. The interior is richly decorated by a beautiful set of wrought iron grids, marble altars from the 17C and 18C, Mignard, Parrocel, Duplessis paintings, a primitive of the Avignon School ,and above all, a set of golden statues, The treasure of the cathedral is endowed with religious goldsmithery (12-19C), religious ornaments (18-19C) and Saint-Mors (tradition says that it was made with a nail of the cross of Christ) of the Emperor Constantine (4C). Other things to see here,me think, with more time are: the Notre-Dame-de-l’Observance Church, at rue de l’Observance, built in the 16C partially rebuilt in the 19C, The Chapelle Notre-Dame- de-Santé , at avenue Notre-Dame de Santé, a small oratory built around 1401 ,the current chapel was built in the 18C. The Arc de Carpentras, from the 1C; the tour du Beffroi or belfry tower from the 15C, and its 16C clock, marks the site of the castle built in the 12C by the counts of Toulouse, The Porte d’Orange, witness to the military architecture of the 14C, 27 meters high , The Inguimountine, library-Musée de Carpentras in honor of its founder opened in 1745 , transfer to the Hotel d’Alleman on the new boulevards de Carpentras in 1847; Inauguration of the Comtadin Museum in 1913, The City of Carpentras transfered it to the Hôtel-Dieu in 2009, On April 20, 2024 ,the Impuimbertine is now complete at the Hôtel-Dieu with a collection of 800 works is revealed to the public over 1,000m2 of surface. The Carpentras canal, 69 km long, to which are added 725 km of secondary and tertiary canals, mainly in the department of Vaucluse. The aqueduct overlooks the Auzon river, north of Carpentras. The construction of the aqueduct ended in 1734, and aqueduct bridge or canal bridge, remained in activity until 1893-94. A bit of history I like tell us that the episcopal seat definitively returned to Carpentras in 982. This chapter will continue until the abolition of the bishopric of Carpentras in 1801, In 1274, Carpentras changed suzerain when the king of France puts the venaissin comtat to Pope Grégoire X, in accordance with the treaty of Paris from 1229. The temporal lordship of Carpentras remains the property of the bishop. Pope Clément V regularly stays in Carpentras, and before leaving for Aquitaine, he had established his curia in Carpentras. When he died in Roquemaure, at the beginning of his journey, in 1314, the sacred college gathered in Carpentras to elect the new pope, it was only until 1316 that the successor of Clément V will be elected in Lyon in the person of John XXII. Carpentras experienced in the 14C a period of great prosperity with the enclosure built from 1357 which doubles the area of the Romanesque city. The market extended, in 1385, to the Place de la Fusterie, the current place des pénitents noirs, it was Pope Innocent VI which gave order to the Comtadine cities to strengthen themselves. The work in Carpentras began in 1357 to end in 1392. There ,only remains the 1C Porte d’Orange, From 1790, in the revolutionary spirit Carpentras, on the other hand, the inhabitants tried to establish a small independent state, which would make the reforms of the French Constituent Assembly, but without agreeing to bring it together to France , On March 28, 1792, these territories formed two new districts, Avignon in the Bouches-du-Rhône and Carpentras in Drôme. Then, on August 12, 1793 the department of Vaucluse was created, made up of the districts of Avignon and Carpentras, but also those of Apt and Orange, which belonged to the Bouches-du-Rhône, as well as the canton of Sault , which belonged to the Basses-Alpes, The rest is relatively calm.
