This is a memorable city, known to the world and plenty written in my blog on it. One aspect of it are the imposing gates around the fortified center, I come back to my beloved Spain. Never enough of it, as have been coming here since youthful days and had family/friends nearby on the road to Madrid. Toledo should need no introduction to anyone, one of the jewels of the Western world and an example for todays’ societies, I found me a picture in my cd rom vault which together with another one had in other post combine them to do this post for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Puerta Nueva de Bisagra of Toledo !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.
I like to tell you about the Puerta Nueva de Bisagra (Hinge gate) . Of Muslim origin its function was more monumental than defensive since the tower is beautifully decorated with embossed ashlars and the billiard are flush with the ground. It is known as “new” because there is another gate in the vicinity ,smaller size, called the old Gate of Bisagra . Its Muslim name was Bab Al Shaqa , Currently is one of the emblems of the city, both for its beauty and for its access from the north of the city to the Old town. The New Bisagra Gate was one of the city’s tax points. Controls were carried out there, and tolls (portazgo) were collected. One of its plaques still reads that “residents of Toledo and its surrounding mountains were exempt from paying portazgo.” In the 16C, the master builder Covarrubias designed the more modern, Renaissance-style gate. The gate directly behind it, with two square towers topped with hipped roofs, sits atop what is believed to be an earlier gate from the Moorish period. The two towers were built to serve as lookout posts above Covarrubias’s gate. The New Bisagra Gate leads to the parade ground. There, we can see the image of Saint Eugene, the first bishop of Toledo, as well as the statue of Charles V.

The Puerta Nueva de Bisagra is a monumental gate located in the walls of Toledo. It consists of two independent sections joined by two high crenellated walls, forming a courtyard between them. Within this courtyard stands a statue of Carlos (Charles) V, who reigned over all of Europe and the world, including Spain and its vast colonial empire. On the side towers are two seated kings, symbols of good governance, completing the city’s coat of arms. These kings are believed to represent Alfonso VII and Alfonso X the Wise. The outer side features a semicircular arch with rusticated stonework, above which is a large coat of arms of the “Imperial City,” with its double-headed eagle, as well as a pediment with a sculpture of a guardian angel. Two large circular towers flank this entrance. The section facing the city has another semicircular arched doorway, flanked by two square towers topped with pyramidal roofs.

With the exception of a couple time which took the train from Madrid ,most of my visit have by car and on my favorite Parking Corralillo San Miguel at Paseo del Corralillo San Miguel s/n just by the Alcazar fortress (Army museum).
