I like to continue the saga of my dear  Madrid with new pictures from my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, This is again my lost walking trails of wonderful sublime Madrid, Therefore, let me tell you about the former Cervezas El Aguila brewery of Madrid !!!  Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Cervezas El Águila brewery is located at Calle Ramírez de Prado 3 , in the Delicias neighborhood of the Arganzuela district of Madrid.

Madrid

The El Águila company was founded in 1900 by the Schlayer family, of German origin, and established its factory on Calle General Lacy in 1904. Its proximity to the Delicias train station, and the possibility of connecting to the north with the railway ring road that linked the Mediodía station stop (now Atocha station) with the North station loading dock (now Príncipe Pío station), made this location ideal for transporting goods by train and freight wagons. Construction of the factory took place between 1903 and 1904. Between 1908 and 1912, the land located north of the factory was acquired. Subsequently expanded between 1915 and 1935 with the addition of garages, processing modules, cellars, silos, an ice-making facility ,a wine cellar, an expanded barrel room, and a tarring pavilion were built. Cervezas El Águila, S.A. held a 25% market share in its sector during the second decade of the 20C. In the late 1960s, the new factory in San Sebastián de los Reyes began operations, eventually replacing the one in the city in the mid-1980s, eventually closed as well, The Delicias factory operated until 1985, when it closed its doors and remained unused until 1994, when ownership was transferred to the Community of Madrid. In 1994, a competition was held for ideas to transform it into a Cultural Center, and the works were carried out between 1999 and 2003. The Regional Library opened on December 10, 2002, and the Archive opened on April 28, 2003; both institutions are under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Arts. Today, it houses the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid and the Joaquín Leguina Library.

The Cervezas El Águila preserves seven original pavilions of the former brewery, and is one of the best-preserved industrial complexes in Madrid. It is a prime example of the industrial architecture movement that transformed the city economically and socially in the late 19C and early 20C. The Neo-Mudéjar style complex has maintained the original essence of the factory it once housed, and its main street, winding between the former malt house and machine shop pavilions, offers a unique recreation of early 20C industrial Madrid. The central machine pavilion is now the office and public service building of the Regional Archive of the Community of Madrid. It housed the steam engine that drove the transmission shaft for all the factory’s machinery. It was fueled by two German-made coal-fired boilers from Sürther Maschinen Fabrik. This system operated until 1912, when it was replaced by an electric motor. This building also later served as a wort boiling area. The old malt house has been converted into the reading and reference rooms of the current Joaquín Leguina Regional Library. The bulk of the beer production took place here before the fermentation and bottling stages. The cylindrical building, with a spired roof finished in slate, housed the malt roasting kiln. The icehouse now occupies the library’s lobby, where some of the restored original machinery is on display. The first and second silos for grain storage, circular in plan, are still standing. Their outer metal perimeter is preserved, and they are used as library storage areas. The factory offices now house the Legal Deposit Office of the Community of Madrid. The cellar pavilion, where the beer was bottled and stored before distribution, is also preserved. In 2019, Heineken relaunched the “El Águila” brand as a commercial product, but without any direct connection to the original brewery.
