The unique Hospital de Maudes of Madrid !!!

I like to continue the saga of my dear Madrid with new pictures from my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, This is again my lost walking trails of wonderful sublime Madrid, Therefore, let me tell you about the unique Hospital de Maudes of Madrid !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I. 

The Hospital de Jornaleros de San Francisco de Paula, aka the Hospital de Maudes is a complex of buildings located in the Chamberí district of Madrid , with facades at no, 18 Calle de Raimundo Fernández Villaverde , no 17 Calle de Alenza, no 2 Calle de Treviño, and no 17 Calle de Maudes. Despite the various names the hospital has had throughout its history, the name of the former Maudes location where it was built has prevailed. It was designed and built as a hospital to provide free healthcare to day laborers in 1908 and completed in 1916.

The main entrance is on Calle de Maudes. The building designed for consulting rooms was located on Calle de Treviño, while the isolation ward and mortuary were located diametrically opposite on Calle de Alenza. The walled complex features gardens for patients. The operating room was converted into a library, and the remaining buildings into administrative offices for the regional health authority. From the project’s inception, the hospital included an adjoining church, accessible from the ring road opposite Calle de Maudes. The church and its outbuildings were excluded from the 1984 purchase and remain under the foundation’s ownership. The church is notable for its polychrome stained-glass windows in the chapel, crafted by the prestigious Maumejean workshop. This workshop introduced Art Nouveau to Madrid in the late 19C. The inclusion of these stained-glass windows brings it closer to modernism, It is one of the few 20C buildings in Madrid constructed primarily of stone. The complex comprises four galleries arranged in a cross shape, two adjacent consulting rooms, a church, and an entrance from Calle de Maudes.

A bit of history I like tell us that during the Spanish Civil War, as Madrid was on the Republican side following the uprising of July 17th and 18th, 1936. This event made the city a priority military target, and in December of that year, the defense of Madrid began in anticipation of imminent attacks. During this period, the hospital was renamed “Maudes Workers’ Hospital” ,and sometimes also “Cuatro Caminos Workers’ Hospital”. The building was seized by the International Red Aid to provide medical services and assistance to the Republican People’s Army, and was therefore transformed into a field hospital for the 1st Military Region under the control of a trade union. After the war, the building was converted into a military hospital. However, by the late 1960s, it had fallen into disrepair. The Community of Madrid acquired the land through a public auction, purchased the building in 1984, and restored it. Following its renovation, it housed the headquarters of the Regional Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of the Community of Madrid. On September 23, 1986, it was inaugurated as the Regional Ministry of Territorial Policy of the Community of Madrid. Later, it served as the headquarters for the Regional Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning, and Transport, and today it houses the Regional Ministry of the Environment, Housing, and Agriculture.

There , my parents born in Cuba met and later on I was born there too. 100% guanche (annexed Tenerife to Spain on April 10 ,1496). I left Cuba as many have to Madrid, Spain where I lived for 4 years. Then, move to Perth Amboy ,New Jersey USA (living there 13 yrs) ; where I completed high school, became a US Citizen, learned to drive a car, and learned English. Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting. Moving average a home every 5.5 years hopefully this will be my last. Cheers All rights reserved.
