I bring you again to a wonderful city of my dear Spain, I bypass the City many times on my route between France and Spain since 1992. It has been as the old saying said, the beginning of a beautiful friendship of San Sebastian, The choices are endless and very nice spots as we walked all over once in town, I ,again, found me a picture in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take again on the Plaza Gipuzkoa of San Sebastian !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Plaza de Gipuzkoa square, located in the city centre of San Sebastián, is one of the most emblematic places in the city. It is noteworthy the presence of the sculpture of pianist and composer José María Usandizaga, as well as a small meteorologycal pergola, a large clock-table made of white marmol and a large clock made of flowers of different colours. Its gardens and paths, which are located in the middle of the square are meeting and resting spots for many citizens of which many grew up feeding the pond’s ducks. In front of the square we will find the headquarters of the Palacio de la Diputacion or regional council of Gipuzkoa, which was built back in 1885. The impressive Neoclassic building’s entablatures bear the busts of popular sailors from Gipuzkoa. What is more, throughout the year the square plays host to several activities, such as the book fair and the children’s funfairs in the summertime. It is also worth visiting the Crib installed there at Christmas times.

Designed in the style of an English garden, Plaza de Guipúzkoa is characterized by its lush greenery, winding paths, and peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place to relax, reflect, or stroll. The history of the square dates back to the late 19C, a time when San Sebastián was rapidly developing. The city commissioned the renowned French landscape architect Pierre Ducasse to design the square. Ducasse, known for his work on the María Luisa Park in Seville, created a charming pond at the heart of Plaza de Guipúzkoa, forming the centerpiece of the square. A picturesque wooden bridge spans the pond, adding a charming touch to the scene. The bridge offers an ideal vantage point to admire the beauty of the pond or simply to stop and soak up the atmosphere. In addition to its natural beauty, the square is home to a meteorological monument that adds an element of scientific interest to the square. It also includes a complex meteorological station, a large white marble sundial, and an enormous clock formed from flowers of various colors.
The Palacio Provincial de Gupúzcoa, o Palacio de la Diputación Foral de Guipúzcoa or the Provincial Palace of Gipuzkoa, or Palace of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, is located in the Plaza de Gipuzkoa square. It was conceived as three buildings with a single façade: the right wing for the Treasury; the central section for the Civil Government; and the left wing for the headquarters of the Provincial Council. The main façade is reminiscent of the Paris Opera. Its design was completed in 1878 and construction began in 1885. A fire destroyed the interior, so it was rebuilt, preserving as many of the existing elements as possible, with the work completed in 1890. Inside, the most notable features include the vestibule, with its staircase and stained-glass window depicting the swearing of allegiance to the fueros (charters of rights) by king Alfonso VIII; the Session Hall; the Government Chamber; the Office of the Deputy General; the Library; the Queen’s Room; and the Reception Hall.
