I bring you again to a wonderful city of my dear Spain, I bypass the City many times on my route between France and Spain since 1992. It has been as the old saying said, the beginning of a beautiful friendship of San Sebastian, The choices are endless and very nice spots as we walked all over once in town, I ,again, found me a picture in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take again on the Jardines de Alderdi Eder of San Sebastian !!!  Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Jardines de Alderdi Eder gardens (“beautiful place” in Basque), located opposite the City Hall and La Concha Bay, are one of the city’s most iconic sights. They were created in 1880 on a former military training ground next to La Concha Bay. Their initial purpose was as a place for recreation and entertainment, and a circus, a velodrome, and a puppet theater were built within their grounds. However, in 1887, a casino was constructed, which later became the City Hall, leading to a complete renovation of the area. The garden was designed by the French landscape architect Pierre Ducasse in 1885, and is notable for its hundred tamarind trees that provide shade, as well as flowerbeds and green hedges, a pond, and various fountains and statues. The sculptures displayed here, including the majestic marble lions and the charming carousel, serve as bridges to the city’s cultural history. These works not only decorate the park but also tell chapters of San Sebastián’s life, from the splendor of the Belle Époque to episodes of wartime intrigue. In short, Alderdi Eder is more than a park; it is the heart of Donostia-San Sebastián, a place where natural beauty and historical richness converge to create an unparalleled meeting place. To visit it is to discover an essential chapter in the city’s story.

The Jardines de Alderdi Eder are a rectangular green space landscaped with geometric flowerbeds, fountains, palm trees, and several sculptures, and is located directly next to the Paseo de la Concha promenade. At the edge is a tiled pool with lion figures, and in its center, a female fountain figure pours water into the pool. Over time, its character evolved into a tranquil urban garden, replanted during the redevelopment of the seafront promenade. The park is open 24 hours a day and accessible from several sides, including for strollers and wheelchairs. There is a playground on the west side, and the paths are wide enough for a relaxed stroll along the flowerbeds. It is located at De Alderdi Eder Parkea, s/n

The Jardines de Alderdi Eder are one of San Sebastián’s historic gardens that has undergone the most changes. Today, its balanced layout of rectangular gardens and geometric flowerbeds brimming with vibrant floral displays continues to be a delight. While the Canary Island date palms stand out for their exuberance, the most characteristic trees are undoubtedly the tamarinds with their twisted trunks, flexible branches, and pale pink flowers. This species, popularly known as “tamarinds”, was introduced for its resistance to storms and has become the city’s emblem. Alderdi Eder also features a secluded area with pergolas, where a sculptural group of lions seems to guard the tiled pond with its fountain in the shape of a female figure and the bust of the writer José María Salaberría. Next to the children’s play area, a romantic carousel evokes the Belle Époque. In August, it’s one of the must-see gathering places to watch the Semana Grande fireworks. Its charming carousel with the bay as a backdrop offers a picture-postcard setting!

There , my parents born in Cuba met and later on I was born there too. 100% guanche (annexed Tenerife to Spain on April 10 ,1496). I left Cuba as many have to Madrid, Spain where I lived for 4 years. Then, move to Perth Amboy ,New Jersey USA (living there 13 yrs) ; where I completed high school, became a US Citizen, learned to drive a car, and learned English. Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting.
