This is Cany-Barville !!!

In my nostalgic saga of my family visits to wonderful places in my belle France, we found one off the beaten path we like,  We have come here by car in my road warrior trails and found me a gem even if not open to the public, I did found me a picture in my cd rom vault that prompted me to do this post for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on this is Cany-Barville !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The town of Cany-Barville is located in the Seine-Maritime dept 76 in the Normandie region of my belle France. It is 19 km from Fécamp, 46 km from Dieppe, 65 km from Rouen, 187 km from Versailles, and 454 km from my current home, We came by here from Versailles taking the D186 (Bd du Roi) then Bd Saint Antoine same road dir Saint Germain en Laye but connect at exit/sortie 6 to the A13 autoroute de Normandie dir Rouen, taking exit/sortie 22 to the N138 road rocade de Rouen becoming the N338 over the Seine river becoming the A150 road which connects with the A29 to D926 to D50 same road which becomes D131 to entrance of castle.

The Château de Cany is a 17C residence in the Louis XIII style. The château itself stands alone on a rectangular platform bordered by stone balustrades and surrounded by moats fed by the Durdent river. It consists of a large rectangular main building measuring 10 meters by 45 meters, flanked by two projecting wings, on three levels, and totals approximately 1,300 m2 of living space. It is built of brick, limestone and sandstone, and is covered with a slate roof. It is preceded by a vast courtyard bordered by two long symmetrical outbuildings, housing the stables and carriage houses, with two large detached pavilions housing the chapel and the former charterhouse. Inside, the castle has kept the decor and furniture of its apartments intact. The 50-hectare English-style park was redesigned by Prince Edward of Montmorency-Luxembourg, under Louis-Philippe. Since 2020, the castle become an entirely private residence again and is no longer open to the public, both inside and outside. Even if I can took the photo from afar….

A bit of history of the castle of Cany, I like tell us that originally, the land of Cany, seat of a lordship during the ducal era, then united with the royal domain, passed in 1370, by way of exchange, to the counts of Alençon. Acquired in 1598 by Adrien de Bréauté, it fell in 1634 to Pierre Le Marinier, the sponsor of the current castle. The castle was built between 1640 and 1646. The castle, equipped in 1760 with vast outbuildings and water features, survived the French revolution without damage, then passed by alliance at the end of the 18C to Anne-Christian de Montmorency-Luxembourg. In the 19C, the estate was the possession of the Count of Hunolstein. In 2012, it belonged to Laure Normand, daughter of Count Antoine de Dreux-Brézé, himself the grandson of the Count of Hunolstein.

Other things to see here are the Church of Saint-Martin which dates from the 16C, although it has often been modified. The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Barville, a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Saint Simeon, which recalls the existence of the eponymous village. It was built in 1527, as indicated by the inscription on the door lintel.

A bit of history of the town of Cany-Barville I like tell us that the site is occupied by a Norman castle from 1130. It was then a fief of the King of England. It passed to the French crown in 1204. To the south, Barville is an independent parish with its Notre-Dame Chapel which still exists today. The territory of Barville was attached to Cany in 1827 to form the commune of Cany-Barville. Four watermills are represented by a cogwheel on the map between Canty and Barville. They were among the 33 watermills still operating on the Durdent river in the 18C. As shown by the ruling of the King’s Council of State of April 18, 1736, these mills were mainly used for bleaching linen. On the left bank is drawn the castle of Cany; before the French revolution, the powerful Marquis of Cany-Canyel had a right of high justice over his lands.
